administration. Such conduct must greatl y lessen
popular respect for the Chief Mag istrate. It he can-
not or will not control his own household , he oug ht
not to ask or expect others to come to his rescue in
the hour of danger. It was, in former days , made a
grave charge against Democratic administrations ,
that local oOicers wepermitte d to interfere (such
was the expression) in elections ; and , if I am not
mistaken , nearl y all now forming members of the
present administrati on denounced such interference
as incompatible with the purity of the elective fran-
chise. I could never see much danger from that
quarter , but if thos e who urged it then did , it is their
duty now, when in power , to enforce obedience up-
on their own appointees. This laxity coup led with
another significant fact , kindred in its character ,
must raise a doubt of former sincerity. I refer to
the fact that that now amidst all the apprehended
danger of a dissolulion of the Union , the President
and his cabinet are busy in removing the few remain-
ing good Union Democrats from subordinate offices ,
and filling their places with men , some , at least , of
whom give no reliable evidence of respect for the
Constitution beyond a desire to hold a commission
under it. This pitiful movement in the midst of a
threatened revolution has but one parallel in history
—"Nerofiddled while Home was burning."
It is possible this censure may to some extent be
removed by' the future action of the Executive.—
There is some reason to believe the President is
about to make himself felt in quarters where official
interference in elections has alread y mateiiall y af-
fected the honor and good name of his administra-
tion. The Washington Republic has latel y, more
than once, hinted at such a result , and from other
reliable sources the same course of Executive action
is pretty clearl y indicated. Be this as it may, the De-
mocratic party has but one course to pursue—prevent ,
if possible, the election toCongres of any mans favor-
able or pled ged to a continuance of the slavery ag i-
tation. Ours is now what it ever has been , the Un-
ion part)7, and that character our press should main-
tain. The peop le are coming right. A great change
has alread y taken plac e, and there is reason to be-
lieve a large portion of the Union Whi gs of District
No. 10 will , in future , withhold support from the
present nominee. You have thus far foug ht the bat-
tle nobl y: continue so to do, and 1 1shall have confi-
dence in the final trium p h of Ihe democratic party
in your distiict. Yours trul y,
P. W. Leland.
The examination of Henry Long, the alleged fu
gitive slave , in New York , still , progresses, a'
nd ex
cites considerable interest.

I>r. Cortoett's Sarsaparilla.
From its having almost always baffled the most skil-
ful medical treatment , it has very justl y been termed
the "Opprobrium of Physicians " and , until within a few
years generall y considered incurable , althoug h many
medical men of tho highest standing, among whom we
may mention Lacnnec and his fiiend Bayle—both dis-
tinguished authors , admit that this much dreaded dis-
ease may be cured , even in its advanced stages, when
the lungs are not comp letely disorganized. The rcmc- 1
dy which we now offer , W'lSTAU'S BALSAM OF
WILD CHERRY , for the cure of this disease, not onl y
emanates from a regular Physician , but has also been
well tested in all the complaints for which it is recom-
mended.
