@ BOOKS: A tale of terror at sea Cape author Michael Tougias will present a talk on his new book Ten Hours Until Dawn at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis on Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. that will include a narrated slide presentation of the author's true ac- count of bravery and death at sea. The book tells the tale of the tanker Global Hope, which ra'n into problems during the Blizzard of 78 off the shores of Massachusetts. Blue Nights in Provincetown Provincetown Arts has published a large-format book of photographs by George Hirose titled Blue Nights : Provincetown Exposures , a book portraying Cape light when the sun has set and the bevy of colors that the naked eye doesn't pick up. Book sale in Osterville The Friends of the Osterville Village Library sponsors a used book sale ev- ery Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon as well as the first and third Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pre- school stories and activities for ages 3 to 5 Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. To pre-register, call 508-428-5757. Barnes & Noble Tuesday toddler story time is at 10 a.m. with preschool story time every Wednesday at 11 a.m. On Fridays there is a special story time for school-age children at 7 p.m. A book club focusing on personal growth and spirituality meets at 9:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month. Cotuit Library Story times at the Cotuit Library are Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 2:15 p.m. when pre-schoolers are welcome for stories, songs and crafts. UL "CANVAS: Barnstable Winter whites and more at Cotuit center The Cotuit Center for the Arts is offering "Second Sundays" work- shops for children ages 6-12. These workshops will be held the second Sunday of each month from 1 until 3:30 p.m. The fee for each work- shop is $25 and pre-registration by the previous Wednesday is a must. On Jan. 14 instructor Michelle Law will lead the class in Winter Whites. Students will sculpt white clay, then sketch the piece while paying atten- tion to the various colors created by light and shadow. Around the Cape Calling all artists! On Jan. 15 AmeriCorps Cape Cod will hold an arts festival designed to introduce children to the Cape Cod art community. This event will focus on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his devotion to equality and the power of service. Artist volunteers are being sought to spend this day work- ing with children on art projects focus- ing on the importance of community and service at the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod in Mashpee. Winter is focus of faculty exhibition The Creative Arts Center's Faculty Exhibition will have an opening recep- tion on Dec. 31 during First Night Chatham. Yarmouth Art Guild announces exhibits The Yarmouth Art Guild at the Cape Cod Cooperative Bank on Route 6A in Yarmouthport is featuring artists Pat Nickerson and Willie Hay- duk, while Joan Harvey is exhibiting at the Sovereign Bank on Route 28 in South Yarmouth through Jan. 10. December Art at Brewster Ladies' Library The December art show at the Brewster Ladies' Library features "Recent Works" by Marion Beck von Peccoz and Alicia Hammat. Von Peccoz recently won first prize for pastels in the 2006 All Cape Art Show. Both artists have studied at the Chatham Creative Arts Center. CCMA extends NY Art Students' show The Cape Cod Museum of Art has announced the extension of the New York Art Students League Show through tomorrow. This is a rare chance to see the works of artists known nationally for their influence on the entire American art scene. CCMA is located on Route 6A in Dennis at the Cape Cod Center for the Arts. Art transforms at CCMA A new exhibit by Cape artist RJ Katz, "Transforming Art: As Time Goes By," is open at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. This exhibition offers viewers Cape Cod scenes from two points of view: one from the artist who painted it in the past and the second from the photographer, Katz, who turned a lens on it in the pres- ent. Viewers will have the opportunity to compare and contrast the feelings evoked by the different mediums, as well as the varying time periods re- flected in the works. This exhibit runs through March 4 with gallery talks on Jan. 13 and Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. Artists' works make treasured gifts The Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provinc- etown at 432 Commercial St. offers the works of 17 gallery artists for sale, including still lives, figure works, abstract images and more. Oils on exhibit at CCMA A new show of colorful oil paint- ings by artist Lillia Frantin of North Falmouth Village has opened at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on Route 6A in Dennis. The show features works from her international travels, New England, Northern New Mexico and studio interiors. A reception will be held on Jan. 12, and Frantin will speak about her works on Jan. 18. Holiday exhibit in Mashpee BFW Gallery in Mashpee Commons is exhibiting its "Small Jewels Holiday Show," featuring artists J. Vincent Diggs, Jerome Greene, Kathryn Kleekamp, Alison Vernon, Diana Lee, Susan Kelley and Keith Howarth, through Monday at the gallery located across from Star- bucks. Call 508-539-6900. Artful Thursdays at Dennis museum Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis is offering admission by donation all day every Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and talks at 11 a.m., tours at 2 p.m. and special events on selected Thursday evenings. The talks will be given by exhibiting curators and artists and the tours by museum docents. Meet your friends, spend time at the museum and then take in lunch or dinner at local restaurants offering Artful Thursdays 10 percent discounts: The Mercantile for lunch and Center Stage Cafe for dinner.
