The Barnstable Planning Board
closed its hearing on the AHOD,
with plans to review comments
gathered at that meeting and the
joint public hearing with the town
council at asubcommittee meeting
the following day.
It' s no mystery where the
planning board will end up on
the matter. Board members made
clear at the council hearing and
at Monday 's meeting that they
strongly support the proposal and
cannot understand the resistance
coming from the council.
"I think we 're looking at a
stubborn situation here, and it's
too bad it's come down to this, a
push-pull," board member David
Munsell said.
Arevisedproposal wasdiscussed
with town councilors, but never
brought back for a vote.
First hundred years of
the Patriot headed for
searchable database
With microfilm copies of The
Barnstable Patriot dating back to
the newspaper 'sfounding in 1830,
the Sturgis Library welcomes visi-
tors from all over who are tracking
genealogical, shipping or other
information from the 19lh and 20th
centuries.
In 2007, it will no longer be
necessary to travel down the Old
King's Highway to Barnstable
village and switch on the playback
machine.Thanks to afederal grant
administered by the state Board
of LibraryCommissioners and the
stateAdvisoryCouncilonLibraries,
every page from the first century
of the Patriot will be digitized and
available instantly from anywhere
in the world with an Internet
connection.
Summer's gone, but high
gas prices aren't
It used to be that smart Cape
travelers would know to avoid the
gas stations immediately off the
Sagamore rotary because they
commanded highway prices. Now
prices at those same stations are
worthlining up for when compared
to the stubbornly high prices
across Cape Cod and especially
in Hyannis.
"You know, I really don't know
whythey'rehangingaroundhigher,"
said Art Kinsman, AAA's director
of government affairs for Southern
New England. "In general, prices
could be a lot lower."
So what gives?
Thebest explanation spokesmen
for AAA ofSouthern New England
could offer was a combination of
retailers holding prices higher to
maximizeprofits and, with greater
emphasis,the zone pricingutilized
by gas distributors.
"Gas stationsdon't makemoney
whenpricesgoup,"AAAspokesman
John Paulsaid, "Theymakemoney
when prices go down."
Council rejects nixing
Yarmouthairport rep
Robert Howard's hope became
a reality, as the Barnstable Town
Council rejected a resolve asking
that the role of Yarmouth' s
representative on the Barnstable
Municipal Airport Commission be
decreased.
Howard is the Yarmouth
representative and at the August
BMAC meeting he said he'd be
unable to attend the September
meeting but expressed his hope
thatwhenhereturned thefollowing
month he'd still have a seat at the
table.
The resolve was sponsored by
Hyannis Councilor Jim Munafo,
who does not believe the current
practice of allowing a resident of
another town to participate as a
member of the commission, in all
activities save voting,isinlinewith
the town's administrative code.
First Baptist Church
considers future of its
stained glass windows
They aren't the kind of intricate,
highly-decorated stained glass
windows you'd find in Washing-
ton'sNational Cathedral. They're
simple in design, straightforward
in their messages. You don't need
an art critic to figure them out.
Come to think of it, the eight
stained glass windows of First
Baptist Church inHyannisare alot
like two of its departed and deeply
missed members, Eugenia Fortes
and Ruth Rusher.
If those community activistshad
passed on in the 1890s, someone
might have suggested raising
memorial windows for them. But
it was 2006, and the question for
the church now is how to preserve
not just the memories but also
the crumbling glass memorials for
Dr.J. Wells McGregor, who died in
service,and someimportant names
- Bearse, Crocker and others - in
the church's history.
The church was looking for
a source of money to make the
repairs, including possibly town
Community Preservation funds.
Barros bests Bennett for
Senate
The X factor of state Senate
candidate Doug Bennett held
supporters of his opponent in the
Republican primary,Ric Barros,in
suspense as the votes rolled in.
Would Bennett' s perpetual
presence in the Hyannis airport
rotary since November 2005 ,
complete with his handmade and
painted signs, result in an upset?
When partial returns showed
the Nantucket carpenter leading
the Centerville lawyer in some
Barnstable precincts, brows were
furrowed.
But Ban-osalreadyhad Bennett's
island home in his pocket , by
an unofficial count of 370 to 100,
and soon other towns fell into his
column. Shortly before 10 p.m.,
Barros declared victory.
"This race was never about the
anti-Bennett vote,"he said. "It was
about who's the best candidate to
make the fight to get elected."
Barros rounded immediately
on Democratic incumbent
Rob O'Leary, blasting him for
"ineptitude" in voting to remove
