"Not even Santa?"Anita
asked."Are you sure?"
"Well, OK, if Santa calls,
I'll talk to him.But NO ONE
ELSE!!"
•••
Whenthe phone rang at the
Chiefs house at 6:15the next
night,he was just sitting down
to a Christmas Eve dinner of
baked cod, baked beans and
home-baked corn bread. It
was dark outside.Anita was
calling."I think you better get
down here right away,Chief.
There are a lot of people stand-
ing outside the building, and I
don't know what they want."
"It's Christmas Eve! Crim-
iny.Why don't you just tell
them to go home?"
"They look angry,"said
Anita."I don't wantto go out
there alone."
"OK. I'll be there in five
minutes."
Sure enough, five min-
utes later the Chief came
into the office through the
back door."What's going
on,Anita?"
"Just about everyone in
town wantsyou to arrest
the Houlihans and get all
the stolen things back."
"My goodness!These
people are going to drive
me crazy.It's Christmas
Eve!!They all need to be
home in bed so Santa can
bringthem their presents.
Don't they know that?"
said the Chief."I'm going
to tell them to go home
right now!"He opened the
door, but everyone had left.
"They're all gone, Chief. Do
you think they went
home? No, wait.There's
a note on the door,"said
Anita.
"What does it say?"
She read the note out
loud."Wecould not wait
any longer.Weare going
to get those hooligans
before they run off with
our things."And it's
signed:"TheTownspeo-
ple. P.S.,Merry Christ-
mas!'"
"We'd better get to the
Houlihan house before
anything bad happens."
•••
The Chief and Anita
arrived at the Houlihan house
to find it surrounded by all the
people in town.The Houlihan
familywas on the front porch,
huddled together looking
scared.
Mr.Dippy yelled to Billy,
"I saw you with that crow the
other day.Youwere teach-
ing him how to steal things,
weren't you?"
"I was just teaching him to
fetch, that's all,"said Billy as
he ducked behind his father.
"Besides I think you're silly.
Why can't you leave us alone?
Wedidn't do anything."
"Billy,behave yourself,"said
his father."Sorry, Mr.Dippy, I
realize that everyone is upset,
but my boy says he didn't do it
and I believe him."
The Chief got out of the car.
"This isn't right for you to
accuse the Houlihans like this.
Wedon't know if they really
took anything.All of you GO
HOMElThen he turned to
Billy."Is that true Billy? Did
you really teach a crow to
fetch?"
"Arrest him,"said a voice
from the crowd.
"Takethem all to jail,"said
another voice.
"Wedidn't do anything,"
cried Mrs. Houlihan.
"Wewant our things,"some-
one shouted.
"Everybody,please go home.
It's Christmas Eve, and you are
all being very, very bad. Mr.
Houlihan, why don't you take
your family into the house and
let me handle this?"said the
Chief.
"Wedidn't take anything
that wasn't ours,"said Billy.
"Somebody else must have
done it.We're not the only kids
livingin this town."
"If it was children that took
everything,"said the Chief."We
don't know for sure that it was
kids at all now, do we?"
•••
The Houlihan family stood
out on their porch looking at
the crowd that had gathered
on the front lawn. Mr.Houli-
han kept asking them to go
home and leave his family in
peace.
"Isn't this the time of year
when we are supposed to love
our neighbors? It's Christmas
Eve. Peace on Earth, good will
towards men,"he said.
The Chief stood on the lawn
and faced the crowd."Mr.
Houlihan is right, and you
should all know that. Now you
people had better calm down
and let me take care of this."
He reached inside his jacket,
which made everyonetake a
step back and take little deep
breaths. When his hand came
out again,it held his shiny
gold badge in the shape of a
star.Therewere many sighs of
relief.
"I am the duly elected Chief
of Police of the fair Townof
Barnstable, County of Barnsta-
ble, Cape Cod, Massachusetts,
United States of America,
North America,Western Hemi-
sphere, Planet Earth,The Solar
System,The Universe! Right?
And I will get to the bottom of
this or my name is not ..."He
seemed to have forgotten his
own name because he was so
mad.
"Yourname is Chief Bobbin,'
whispered Anita.
"Oh, right. Or my name is
not Chief ...,"but the badge
slipped from his hand and fell
to the ground.
Just then, a big black crow
swooped down and snatched
the badge and flew away with
it.
