where he had left anything
came in with a long list of
things which »><= had lost and
wK.cii nis wife had already
found.
Sally Blume was there with
a large photo of her gold ring.
Almost everyonewho lived in
Barnstable was there.Arnold
and Elisabeth Houlihan who
had just moved to town were
there along with their six
children.
"Order, order,"said the
Mayor as he banged his gavel
on his desk so hard the head
came off and almost hit Mr.
Dippy.
"I'll have a hamburger,
French fries and a chocolate
shake"said Mr. Dippy.Every-
one laughed.
"Please, may we have some
quiet,"the Mayor pleaded. But
everyone was busy telling
their neighbors what had been
stolen from them.
"Quiet!"hollered Chief Bob-
bin, and everyone in the room
stopped talking. Even the cat
in the corner who was meow-
ing didn't make a sound.
It had been decided to let
people speak in alphabetical
order,whichangered Mr. Zotz.
"I don't want to be last
because my name starts with
a'Z'!I am sick and tired of
always being last. I used to live
in Provincetown, and that's
the last stop on the Mid-Cape
Highway.And we had the
last house on the right on the
last street on the left. I'm sick
and tired of being last! And
besides, I won't get to bed
before midnight judging by the
size of this crowd, and I don't
want to get Santa mad if I miss
my bedtime."
"I don't think Santa will be
mad at you this time,"said the
Chief.
After a lot of mumbling and
grumbling, it was decided that
Mr.Zotz would be allowed to
speak first and then every one
else could talk in alphabetical
order.
"Alright, Mr.Zotz, you may
speak first,"said the Mayor.
"What shall I speak about?"
Everyone laughed. And Mr.
Zotz looked a little embar-
rassed and fiddled with his tie
and cleared his throat.
"We are here to
discuss the matter
of stolen or missing
property,"responded
the Chief.
Mr.Zotz stood with
his hat in his hand
and declared."What
stolen property? I
thought this was
going to be a Christ-
mas party.I love
Christmas parties.
Wouldyou like me
to sing,"The 12 Days
of Christmas.'I can
sing it forwards and
backwards."
Everyone said,"No
thanks,"except the
Mayor and the Chief."Don't
you want to report anything
stolen?"asked the Mayor.
"I lost a nickel when I was
5 years old.That was about
70 years ago. I'd like to get it
back."
Everyone laughed. Mr.Zotz
put on his hat and went home
singing,"On the first day of
Christmas my true love gave to
me, a partridge in a pear tree.
On the second day ..."
JimmyAppleton who surfed
during storms at Dowses
Beach stood up and said he
had gotten three gold stars
on his homework. He left
his paper on the front porch.
When he went to show his
Mom and Dad, the gold stars
were gone.
Jennifer Bailey who was
born in Cotuit stood up next
and said she parked her bicy-
cle near Murphy's Candy Store
and when she came out, the
little bell that went"brrrrrng,
brrrrng"on her handlebars
was gone.
John Cobb whose mother
lived in Centerville stood up
next and said that he had a
robot with a silver hat and
when he went to play with the
robot, the hat was gone.
Little Donny Duncan whose
dad worked in Hyannis said
he left his new retainer by
the bathroom window and
when he went to get it, it was
gone and his Dad was so mad
because a retainer cost a lot of
money.
Eddy Eng who did a report
on the 375th Anniversary of
the town had a brass book
marker in his book and when
he put it down on the table
outside the library to talk to
Reverend Foster, he turned and
the marker was gone, and he
could not remember where his
place in the book was.
Old FannyFoppler, the
first baby born at Cape Cod
Hospital, was missing a gold
bracelet.
Ginny Greene who swam
every summer in Hamblin
Pond was putting on her knee
pads so she could go skating
and saw that one of the little
shiny buckles was gone.And
it was a new set of knee pads,
and her Mom got real mad and
said now she could not skate.
"No pads, no skating, little
lady,"her Mom said.
Suddenly, Oscar O'Hara
from Osterville stood up
and shouted,"What's all this
alphabet business? I'm visiting
my friends here in Marstons
Mills. I need you to find my
little daughter's orange socks.
They're teeny tiny. She'sjust
a baby. Her name is Ophelia.
I put them out on the clothes-
line, and they're gone and ..."
Wilma Wickins stood up and
said,"Look, Mr. O'Hara, we all
lost something. Or it got stolen.
I'm from West Barnstable, and
I had a bag of walnuts and ..."
"Everyone! Please be quiet.
Settle down,"said the mayor.
"Everyone take your turn,
or we'll all be here till next
Christmas!"
"It's next Christmas
already?"said Mr. Dippy."Did I
miss the whole thing?"
"No, you didn't miss any-
thing.Please just sit down and
relax,"said the Chief.
Everyone in town took
his turn. Even Willy Xavier
whose name started with an
X had something missing. He
had just moved to Barnstable
from Xander, Ohio, with his
Mom and Dad and three baby
sisters.They had spent six
months looking for a place in
town that started with an X,
but couldn't find one. But that
didn't stop them. All the color-
ful keys on his xylophone were
missing.
