Another positive for the
women is the camaraderie.
"It's a real support group,"
said Bullock. "We're always
sharing and caring."
As an instructor in the
Lebed Method,Doonan iswell
aware of the importance of
movement, especially as one
ages. The Lebed Method is a
form of therapeutic exercise
programfor breast cancer sur-
vivors as well as those living
with arthritis, chronic fatigue
syndrome, Parkinson's and
other illnesses, and focuses
onhealingthrough movement
and dance. "It is better than
jazz and balletat this stage of
our lives," said Doonan.
While tapping may keep
the women active and alert,
perhaps its best aspect is
that it simply makes folks
happy. "I feel just like one of
the Rockettes," said Louise
McLaughlin of Dennisport .
"We can hear music in those
taps."

LastSeptember,the 14th,20
membersofTRIADwere seen
convergingonthe COMMFire
station in Centerville. What
were they going to do?
Well, let's start with what
happened a couple of years
back. The town had received
a grant for "FILE OF LIFE"
envelopes.These are the ones
you fill with your pertinent
medicalinformationandmag-
neticallyattach to yourrefrig-
erator.
That way, after you make a
"911" call, the EMTs willavail
themselves of this critical
information. Sounds simple,
doesn't it? That is if they can
find your home. Some houses
had no numbers whatsoever.
Other numbers could not be
seen. The biggest problem
was that some numbers were
taken from old zoning maps.
Others were correctly listed
in the Verizon database and
could be integrated into the
"Verizon 911" system, which
enabled responders to come
to the right house.
Which is which now? What
can be done for our safety?
First of all, Town Manager
John Klimm asked the engi-
neering division to see what
couldbe done.FrankSchlegel,
amember of the division, was
appointed. Thisturned out to
be aback-breakingjob. Frank
could determine the correct
number for a home, but how
would he and the town know
whetherthiswasaffixedtothe
house in the proper manner?
Also, does the display of
these numbers conform to:
Massachusetts General Law
ch.148 s.59 and: The Town
of Barnstable General Ordi-
nance, Chapter III, Article V?
Thisinformation canbefound
at www.barnstabletriad.org
Now comes the big ques-
tion: Are all houses in the
Town of Barnstable correctly
marked?
The Town's SALT Com-
mittee of Triad, under the
leadership of Mel Pauze,took
on an enormous task. The
townwas dividedintovillages.
Each village was separated
into zones. With the help of
the engineering department,
maps and data sheets were
generated.And then camethe
real work.
Triad volunteers were di-
vided into groups of three to
an automobile. A driver, an
observerandastatisticianwho
usually sat in the back seat
with map and clipboard.The
"backseat driver" also had to
be agoodnavigator.Theywere
givenmapsanddatasheetsfor
the areatheywere assignedto
and off they went.
This was done without any
time and mileage compensa-
tion whatsoever.They cruised
and observed from street to
street. Correct numberswere
noted along with ones that
could not be seen without
extraordinary effort. As of
this writing, the villages of
Cotuit, Centerville,Osterville,
Marstons Mills and West
Barnstable were completed.
Hyannis and Barnstable are
yet to be done.
There are a total of about
16,770 plots covered so far
with 3000 not making the
specifications. All this would
be of absolutely no use unless
the ownersoftheseproperties
were notified.
That was the task of the 20
volunteers converging on the
COMM Fire station last Sep-
tember.Envelope stuffing.
The Town EngineeringDe-
partment provided form let-
ters, envelopes and address
label sheets with property
addresses and addresses of
owners. The address label
sheets did not necessarily co-
incide.Somelettersweresent
asfar asthe Westcoast and all
over the United States. Some
of the homes were summer
homes or owned by absentee
landlords.
The mailing costs are un-
derwrittenby the Fire Depart-
mentsoftherespectivevillages.
It ishoped by the Firemen,the
emergency medical techni-
cians,the Police and the hard-
working volunteers of Triad,
that owners notified, take the
corrective steps to come into
compliance with the law.
They should also be con-
cerned with the safety of the •
occupants of these homes.
Remember, if you need them
most and they can't find you,
they can't help you.
On a good day,get out and
look at your house number.
Can you see it on a stormy
night?
