Happy December to all of
you,
I hope this finds you in
good spirits and better
prepared for the upcom-
ing holidays than I am. I
noticed in today's paper
a story about 10 tips to
decrease the holiday stress.
Of course I was in too much
of a rush to get out the door
to be able to read it! I did
have some quiet time in my
car on the way to work to
contemplate this column
and thought I would ask for
your help.
How have you dealt with
dreams and regrets in your
life? If there are passions you
have followed, how have you
made it happen? If there are
regrets that you ponder as
you he in bed at night, what
would you want me and oth-
ers to learn from them?
Please consider drop-
ping me a Line at the Senior
Center or via e-mail (Elyse.
degroottn town.barnstable.
ma.us) if you have thoughts
about these questions. I am
sincerely interested.
Let me put these ques-
tions in context for you.
Last week I was fortunate
enough to witness several
events that truly inspired
me, whileat the same time
forcing me to pause and col-
lect my thoughts. The first
was the "retirement" party
for Cathy Pastva, the execu-
tive director for Alzheimer's
Services of Cape Cod and
the Islands. If you know
Cathy, I don't need to tell
you what a visionary she
has been. If you don't know
Cathy, ask anyone in the
local non-profit world and
they willhappily share sto-
ries of how Cathy touched
hundreds of local fives. But
it's Cathy's out side world
that caused me to stop.
In her "retirement" Cathy
and her husband are pre-
paring to travel around the
United States on a tan-
dem bicycle. Please don't
misunderstand me; I have
no desire whatsoever to ride
a bike around our country.
None. But the desire and
abilityto pursue a dream
and to make sure it happens
while you still have time and
your health is a wish that I
am sure all of us share.
The second inspiration
came from my 80-something
young neighbor.Let's call
him Sam. In the morning,
Sam's car is usually the first
in the lot at our gym. That's
on Mondays, Wednesday
and Fridays. On Tuesdays
and Thursdays, he bikes to
Woods Hole and back. Shall
I repeat that? 80-something.
Last week, he left a mes-
sage on our machine to
please call him when we
got home. I was worried, so
had my husband walk over
instead. Sam had simply
baked my family a cake and
wanted to make sure we got
it before dinner.
How do we all end up like
Sam? What has he done
that goes beyond good
genes and family history?
I wonder what he thinks
as he gets out of bed in
the morning. Does he have
regrets and has he followed
his passions?
I hope as you read this
you will let me know what it
makes you think. Often we
don't talk with each other
about regrets. Perhaps it
is considered rude. But
how can we teach the next
generation to be thoughtful
of how they use their time
in this world if we haven't
examined our own values
and desires?
On a fighter note, my
hope is that we can of-
fer inspiration every day
in some small way at the
Senior Center. Perhaps
you will find that you can
paint, or that you haven't
forgotten your Italian after
all. Maybe just screwing up
your courage and walking
through the door to combat
your isolation willbe a way
of battling regrets. Come
give us a try.
And have a wonderful set
of holidays.
