season.
Barreto , a methodical , calculating oppo-
nent , secured his three victories through
points, slowly wearing out his competi-
tors. Kidd was a fast and formidable wres-
tler, turning in three beautiful matches
including a great pin against Belmont
early in the day.
Although teammates David Garvey-
Campbell (103), Connor Sinn (160) and
Kyle Cocozza (171) struggled , each
showed tremendous skill and focus while
on the mat.
"I was pleased with how the kids were
using the techniques that we've been

his team. "If they do the stuff we teach

Thanks to blogger Eric
Schwaab for sending the link
to us (and dozens of others,
including senators Kennedy
and Kerry). Full disclosure:
Whitcomb reprinted areport
from this paper about the
Arklow, Ireland , wind farm
in the Journal in 2004.
Danish report sees
nothing detrimental
A scientific report of moni-
toring programs that have
kept tabs two offshore wind
farms in Denmark show no
significant ill effects on the
environment.
The findings outlined in
Danish Offshore Wind/Key
Environmental Issues were
presented at a conference
attended by Cape Wind Vice
President of Project Devel-
opment Craig Olmsted and
Allianceto ProtectNantucket
SoundExecutive Director Su-
sanNickerson.They returned
from Denmark with different
messages.
"The study focused on the
identical issues we face."said
Olmstead. "It beginswith so-
cioeconomic issues and goes
on to avian issues, marine
mammals."
Olmstead said the study
foundthat birdstend to avoid,
rather than crash into, the
turbines. Also, underwater
growtharound the structures
increased rather than de-
creased,andthe level offishin
the area remained steady.
There was nothing in the
study, which was conducted
by scientists, reviewed by an
internationalpanelof experts,
and funded by Danish rate-
payers, that suggested Cape
Wind needed to rethink the
sitingofitsproposed turbines,
according to Olmstead.
In apress statement, Nick-
erson said the siting of the
Nysted and Horns Rev wind
farms was done in a manner
sensitive to their environ-
mental impact. "Cape Wind's
sitingcriteria was purely eco-
nomic, not environmental,"
she said.
Noting that some coastal
areas in Denmark are ex-
cluded from wind farm de-
velopment , Nickerson said
Nantucket Sound merits
similarprotection "not merely
for birds,but for other wildlife
and for a multitude of other
considerations that have to
do with navigation risk, the
threat posed by these tur-
bines to radar, commercial
fishing,economic impacts,vi-
sualimpactsandrecreational
boating."
Perhaps the most impor-
tant attendees for the Ameri-
can project were representa-
tives of the federal Materials
Management Service, which
is preparing a new Draft En-
vironmental Impact Report
on CapeWind'sproposal.The
DEIR maybeissuedfor public
hearings by February.
Lights out?
MarkRodgers,communica-
tions director for Cape Wind,
said recently that the Federal
Aviation Administration has
changeditsapproach to light-
ing the company's proposed
turbines.
"The FAA used to treat
wind turbines exactly
the same as communica-
tion towers ," he said.
"What they came to realize
over timewasthat inthe case
ofwindfarms,especiallylarge
ones, that's just not a close
analogy. You don't drive by
and suddenly see 80 or 100
communication towers, so
they realized that they might
have some overkill in terms
of need."
Instead of two lights per
turbine. Rodgers said, there
willbeonelight onthosealong
the perimeter of the farm.
Most of the internal towers
will not be lighted.
Newnighttimesimulations
will be included in the Draft
Environmental Impact Re-
port due this winter.

Boaters alerted not to use *CG
The Coast Guard has asked all cell phone
service providers in all states except Alaska
to remove the specialized keying sequence
*CG as a method of requesting maritime
emergency assistance.
As an interim measure the Coast Guard
has asked that cell phone service provid-
ers reroute all *CG calls to the nearest 911
operator.
Boaters should use the VHF-FMradio as
their primary means of making a distress
call on the water. Cell phone calls to 911
should be used only as a secondary option.
