RETURNING TO THE FRAY - Scott Nickerson. BHS alumnus
and former hockey player, has returned to Raider territory as
head coach of the boys varsity ice hpckey team.
Fans at the boys varsity
ice hockey game Wednes-
daynightmayhavethought
they saw a familiarface on
the edge of the ice. They
weren't wrong. Barnstable
High School alumnus and
former hockey playerScott
Nickerson has returned to
the fray, this time as head
coach.
Nickerson returns to
Barnstable after several
other coachingstints,most
recently in Sandwich, a
job he enjoyed. "When
the opportunity came [in
Barnstable] this time.T
tried to dive right in," he
said.
That Nickerson is
thrilled to return to his
old stomping grounds,
make that ice rink, is an
understatement. "I didn't
want to leave before." he
said, and explained that life
circumstances warranted
his departure .
Although Nickerson
enjoys sports in general,
he has always gravitated
toward hockey. "I love
the pace of the game, the
physical contact , just the
competition,"he said. "The
type of person who plays
hockey is a hard-working
guy or girl."
Indeed , hockey is in his
blood. Nickerson played
four years for BHS before
skating another four for
St. Lawrence University,
where he also entered
the coaching arena. The
introduction to coaching
at St. Lawrence propelled
him to seek more oppor-
tunities upon returning
to Cape Cod. "As soon as
I got back here, I got right
back into coaching," said
Nickerson.
It helps that Barnstable
is something of a hock-
ey town. "Hockey at
Barnstable got big in
the '70s when the Bruins
were big." Nickerson said.
"It's a sport on Cape Cod,
Barnstabk in particular,
that's alwavs been bis.
Barnstable has always
been a hockey town."
Nickerson is pleased
that the girls hockey pro-
gram is finding success in
Barnstable. "I think it's
great," he said. "My sister
played hockey with (girls
varsity coach) Kim Sulli-
van. It's about time it had
gotten to be a girls' sport.
If this job hadn't opened
up, I probably would have
asked Kim if I could help
out."
Assisting Nicker son
with coaching duties this
season are Nickerson 's
longtime friends Peter
Melchiono and Andrew
Stuart . "Stuart and I."
said Nickerson. "Every
single sport there was
out there we played every
single day."
In hockey's off-season,
Nickerson isthe golf course
superintendent at New
SeaburyinMashpee. Being
able to indulge in his two
top passionshasNickerson
in something of a sports
Nirvana. "I couldn't have it
any better," he said. "Golf
and hockey,and the sched-
ule works really well."

Wednesday night was quite a night
for the BHS girls varsity ice
hockey team. Not only did they
win their home opener and season-start-
ing game against Martha's Vineyard 9-1,
but two players on the team celebrated
significant achievements as well.
Stephanie Scarpato slapped in her 200th
career goal, while teammate Katie Kirwan
notched her 100th
. "We were very excited
for them," said head coach Kim Sullivan.
"Steph and Katie, along with Michelle
Manning, are perhaps the strongest trio in
the league."
Scarpato is the first Cape and Islands
female ice hockey player to reach the 200-
point milestone, doing so in 61 games. She
has now scored 204 points and has tallied
118 goals with 86 assists. Sullivan said
that both Scarpato's and Kirwan's accom-
plishments will be celebrated at the winter
sports ceremony following the season.
The Raiders were formidable against MV,
scoring three times each period. BHS also
took a 6-0 lead before MV's Cristina Wiley
sent one in to stop the shutout.
Scarpato led the scoring for BHS, put-
ting in four, while Claire Toffey scored
twice. Michelle Manning, Kirwan, and
Abby VanWormer each had one goal during
the game.
Next up for the team is a home game
against Milton High School tomorrow at
6:30 p.m.

GOTCHA - Alex Glenn forces his Belmont opponent into a pin for the victory during the BHS wrestling home opener on
Saturday. Glenn spent his summer at wrestling camps.
SAY WHAT? - Aaron Nunes appears to be silenced by his
Belmont opponent who is really trying to push him away.
Nunes proved the powerhouse , pinning for the win.
IT FIGURES - Securing the pin, and the win, with this beautitul Figure Four, Richie Joyal
adds another victory to his roster.
L
ooking calm and
relaxed prior to
Saturday 's sea-
son-opening matches,
Barnstable High School
Head Coach Mike
Magner offered praise
for his wrestlers. "We've
got a great team this
year," he said.
It didn't take long for
the varsity wrestling
team to show their
strength. They swept
their home opener,
defeating Belmont 50-
20 , Hanover 48-28 , and
Stoughton 46-33.
Turning in stellar
performances were
sophomore Jack In-
gram (119 pounds).
Richie Joyal (135),
Thiago Hoffmann (152),
and Mike Amick (189),
who were triple winners
for Barnstable.
Joyal's match against
Belmont proved in-
tensely physical with
both wrestlers treated
for bloody noses. He
captured the win with
a stunning Figure Four
resulting in a nice pin.
Hoffmann and Amick
were back in fighting
form with Hoffmann
strategically racking
up the points all day,
and Amick turning in
a dynamic overhead
takedown during his
Belmont match.
Especially impressive
were the younger wres-
tlers, including several
first-timers. Ingram
showed fierce determi-
nation in his matches ,
earning himself numer-
ous points for skill.
Sophomore Sean War-
ren (130) also notched
a victory by points
against his Belmont
opponent.
Sean Duffy (125) was
so excited that he was
overheard remarking,
"This is my first high
school match and I
pinned!" Aaron Nunes
(112) understood his
enthusiasm, also pin-
ning his Belmont oppo-
nent for a win. Return-
ing wrestler Alex Glenn
(215) also had a pin
against Belmont.
Stirring up a buzz
among the crowd were
the two Nicks - Barreto
(140) and Kidd (145).
While Barreto was
already known in the
sport as the "animal of

BHS wrestlers sweep home opener
Home opener ends in 6-0
victory

The
BHS boys varsity ice hockey
team was so hot Wednesday night
they were lucky they weren't swim-
ming by the time the game was through.
The Raiders shut out the D-Y Dolphins 6-0.
Although the scoring was led by Kyle
Kelley, who had two goals and one assist, it
was an equal opportunity game.
Kyle Phelan started off the scoring just
18 seconds into the game on a conversion
of a corner pass from Andrew Wood.
Cam Larson brought things to 2-0 during
the second quarter. Larson then set things
up for Kelley to send one in when he won a
face-off in D-Y territory.
During the third quarter, in a terrific
example of teamwork, Mike Donohue
dropped in a rebound that came in the
wake of a nice end-to-end rush by Corbin
Fries.
Kelley scored his second and Barnsta-
ble's fifth goal of the evening 27 seconds
later, with Brett Carriero flying along the
left wing before topping off the game with
the sixth tally with just 1:40 left on the
clock.
In the goal, thwarting every D-Y chance
for a score was Matt Everson, who gar-
nered 15 saves and notched his first career
shutout.
The win followed a bittersweet loss last
weekend to Sandwich, who played under
the supervision of acting head coach Jor-
dan Mohre as head coach Derackk Curtis
was in recovery following emergency sur-
gery for a brain tumor.
While BHS head coach Scott Nickerson,
who once coached Mohre while at Sand-
wich a decade prior, couldn't begrudge
Sandwich their win, the 8-2 defeat caught
the Raiders by surprise. "Before that first
match, I would have said we were going
to be off to a great season," Nickerson
said. "We had to reevaluate after that first
game."
With Nickerson's words ringing true
following Wednesday 's game, the team is
preparing for a trip off-Cape to face Dart-
mouth tomorrow at 3 p.m.
