LUCKY LADY - Joan Frederick of Centerville (far right) joins
Barnstable Senior Center members in displaying the quilt she won
in a raffle that raised $3,000 for the Center.
"Amultifaith religious ser-
vice that willreflect on Cape
Cod's energy needs" will be
held New Year's Day at 11
a.m. at Woods Hole Com-
munity Hall. The "environ-
mentaljustice"event, which
will look at how to "balance
human rights needs with the
need for environmental pro-
tection, is sponsored by the
Falmouth Clergy Associa-
tion. The Falmouth village's
traditional New Year's walk
will follow at noon.... After
hearing a host on NPR wres-
tling with whether the late
Chilean dictator 's name is
pronounced "Pino-shay" or
"Pino-chet ," we wondered
if we'll ever see a Cuban
wine named Pinot Che.... We
like to excerpt the summer
reading lists from area high
schools here, but also enjoy
leafing through Falmouth
Academy 's Guide for the
Casual Bookworm , which
includes staff recommenda-
tions for everyone. Here you
can find a biology teacher
touting Phillip Roth's The
Human Stain , a dean who's
not afraid to admit affection
for The DaVinci Code , and a
poetry-loving history teach-
er who trumpets Seamus
Heaney's latest collection,
District and Circle.Ifyou re-
allywant to cut the mustard
inthe faculty lounge,though,
be sure to read the book
recommended by two sci-
ence teachers, a taekwondo
instructor who doubles as a
science teacher, aphotogra-
phyinstructor, and amember
of the buildings and grounds
department: The Omnivore's
Dilemma by Michael Pollan.
The book details how one's
mealsreach one'splate,from
germination to presenta-
tion....
