Season of hoops and pucks begins Winter sports under way at BHS By Kathleen Szmit kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com The football stadium at BHS has been cleaned up following the final game and the soccer fields are vacant. Don't get too com- fortable , though , because winter sports arejust getting started. Practices for many winter sports started more than a week ago, and several teams have participated in scrim- mages against other high schools. Boys varsity basketball coach Sean Donovan is look- ing forward to a successful season. "We have a num- ber of guys returning that have played varsity,"he said. "They haveexperience, which should help us." Donovan is hoping to see his team improve from last year's 8-12 performance. He feels the team has a good chance of getting into the end-of-season tournament. "We've got a lot of players on the same level," he said. "Everybody 's pretty good." Nancy Freeman, girls var- sity basketball coach , is pleased to see her players back in action. "We've got seven returning players,"she said, noting that a particu- larly formidable force is that of Jill Lyon,Morgan Kendrew and Tashauna Ashmeade. "They are quite the three- some," she said. Right now Freeman is keeping her eye on Marga- ret Cobb and Molly Hagan. "Cobb surprises a lot of op- ponents ," the coach said. "And Hagan really developed this summer. I think she will have a good season." Of her overall team, Free- man is confident. "They are fast and experienced ," she said, "especially our start- ing line." Another force to watch this season is the girls' varsity hockey team. No doubt fans willbe ready when star player Stephanie Scarpato takes the ice once more. Last season Scarpato net- ted her 100th goal during her 53rd game, while the team soared to a 16-6-1 season that ended with a trip to the Division I semifinals. The boys' varsity wres- tling season heralds the return of Alex Glenn to the mat. Although Glenn spent the majority of the football season on the sidelines due to injury, when given the green light he opted to forgo football and quietly began preparing for his final BHS wrestling season (though he continued to motivate his gridiron teammates). Glenn, whose successful turns on the mat last year took him all the way to the All-State individual tourna- ment, spent the better part of his summer training at wres- tling camps, and competed in the Bay State Games, at which he claimed the gold medal in his weight class. At 215 pounds and more than six feet tall, Glenn is an intimidating opponent. "I am a brutal, head-on wrestler," he said of his style. This year Glenn is not only gunning for another varsity letter, "and hopefully a four- timeAll-Star, [but] Iwant the State title, too," he said. The wrestling season gets under way officially when the team faces Belmont, Stough- ton and Hanover at home at 10:00 tomorrow morning. The boys' varsity ice hock- ey team also gets their sea- son started tomorrow night with a 7:45 game against Sandwich. Also tomorrow are girls' and boys' varsity swim team Bay Colony Relays at New Bedford High School, while the boys' JV ice hockey team travels to Cape Tech. On Wednesday the boys' basketball teams travel to North Quincy for their first games, while the girls' var- sity ice hockey team battles Martha 's Vineyard at the Kennedy Rink at 4:30 p.m. The boys then take the ice against D-Y at 7:45 p.m. For more information on game dates, times and loca- tions, visit www.highschoo- sports.net. Frenzy comes to Barnstable High School The Cape Cod Frenzy will be taking over the court at Barnstable High School on Sunday with a 7 p.m. game against the MontrealMatrix.Stayingtruetotheirprom- ise of being Cape Cod's team, the Frenzy have enlisted local talent for their halftime show, whichwillbe performed by the dance troupe "Next Level" and representatives of the USA Kung FuAcademy. To further enhance the entertainment the Frenzy is looking for Barnstable "dig- nitaries" - teachers, well-known business people,BHS alumni-to play withthe team for up to 10 minutes. The Frenzy'srecord iseven at 4-4,largely due to their star forward, Rob Sanders, being injured. Once the 6'7", 240-pound forward returns to the courts, no doubt games willbecome more frenzied. Boaters alerted not to use *CG The Coast Guard has asked allcellphone serviceprovidersinallstates except Alaska to remove the specialized keying sequence *CG as a method of requesting maritime emergency assistance. As an interim measure the Coast Guard has asked that cell phone service provid- ers reroute all *CG calls to the nearest 911 operator. Even though they were physi- cally active in the children's home, they both lacked cre- ative imagination. "Allthey did was wrestle each other," said Kate. "When we told them they had to go out- side and play but couldn't wrestle, they didn't know what to do." The boys now boast ac- tive imaginations, as well as healthy appetites, fluent English, and wry senses of humor. They also act like true brothers, teasing each other playfully and occa- sionally bickering. For both, physical activ- ity remains an integral aspect of their lives. "We have a hard time sitting still," admitted Povilas. "I couldn't get ajob with a computer. I'd drive myself insane." While the two are enjoy- ing some athletic downtime this winter (having missed the sign-up deadline), they remain sports enthusiasts, noting that the sport in Lithuania is basketball. "Lithuania is a basketball country," said Povilas. Although Vytas and Po- vilas have been in the U.S. more than a decade, they still refer to themselves as Lithuanian. "I like that I have something more to of- fer than just being Ameri- can," said Povilas. Even so, the boys have immersed themselves nice- ly into the American life- style. While Povilas looks forward to building his own house someday, Vytas is enjoying being ajunior at BHS. "I love school," he said, then cracked a smile. "The social life, World His- tory and lunch." In the spring Vytas plans to rejoin the track team. His favorite events are the 100 meter dash and the 4 x 100 meter relay. "So you're a runner?" he was asked. Before he answered, Povilas lauged. "He likes to think so," he said. Then they're off - best friends for decades, brothers for a lifetime.
