A Christmas Story Harwich Junior Theatre presents A Christmas Story, based on the story by humorist Jean Shepherd, Dec. 8 through the 30th, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, and additional Saturday matinees on Dec. 23 and 30. Set in the 1940s Midwest , it tells the story of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker's quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. The Love of Three Oranges Cotuit Center for the Arts presents this comic fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi and directed by P.J. Auditions HMS Pinafore Strong voices are wanted for a February production of HMS Pinafore at Harwich Winter Theatre. Before and after, enjoy hayrides, music , an outdoor movie , and the Blessing of the Ani- mals along Main Street. On Saturday, Santa welcomes small and large fry for breakfast at the British Beer Company (advance - and required - tickets are available at BBC and the JFK Hyannis museum for $6 today). There's more to do along Main Street Saturday, but at 4 p.m. be down by the artist shanties on Hyannis Inner Harbor to welcome Santa and his friends when he arrives by boat. Back to Bethlehem The First Baptist Church of Hyannis, on the corner of Main Street and High School Road, invites you to "Marketplace in Bethlehem," a unique presentation of the Christmas story, on Friday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. Experience the events leading up to the birth of Jesus. Hear and see the busy village of Bethlehem. Bring the whole family and tell your friends about this meaningful way to celebrate the season. Holly jolly fair in Barnstable St. Mary's Episcopal Church holds its annual Holly Fair Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., selling live greens, handmade wreaths and swags along with gifts, crafts , home-baked goods, a children's shopping room and a special luncheon. The church is on Route 6A in Barnstable Village just west of the village. Artisans boutique in Barnstable The Barnstable Historical Society 's annual Holiday Boutique will feature some 50 artisans at the Daniel Davis House, 3074 Main St. (next to Sturgis Library) on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday through Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. Pick your era at C'ville museum Want to celebrate a Colonial holiday? Or is your preference the 1950s? The Centerville Historical Museum has 14 decorated rooms with those themes plus Maritime and 1870s notions open through Dec. 15. The museum is on Main Street. Village tree lighting set The annual tree lighting on the West Barnstable Village Green will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, with car- oling accompanied by the Brentwood Brass. The fun will continue across the Green at the historic West Parish Meeting House, with the telling of the Christmas story, traditional carols and the West Parish Bell Choir. Admission is free, but please bring a nonperish- able food item to be donated to the Cape Cod Food Pantry. Sponsor a child for Christmas The Salvation Army Hyannis Corps is seeking sponsors for its Dress a Live Doll program , which matches children 12 and younger from at-risk families with sponsors who provide a complete outfit of warm clothing. This year, more than 1,000 children have been accepted into the pro- gram. Sponsors can be individuals or groups. All gifts are due in by Dec. 2. Call 508-775-0364. Greens sale in Centerville Find centerpieces , sprays, holly and bows at the Holiday Greens Sale at Centerville Library, 585 Main St., on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be crafts, jewelry and home-baked goodies. Christmas in Cotuit The annual Holiday Arts & Crafts Festival at Freedom Hall, Main Street, Cotuit, takes place Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of Christmas in Cotuit. Featured will be hand-blown glass, sailors valentines, pottery, hand-painted Christmas cards, gold and silver wire jewelry, ceramics and more. Seasonal refreshments will be served. The festival also includes a Children's Yuletide Party at the Histori- cal Society from 10 a.m. to noon, a musical cabaret at Cotuit Library from 2:30 to 3:30 and hayrides starting at the post office from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Santa arrives by boat at the town dock at 3:45 p.m., followed by a celebration on the Town Green at 4 p.m. Cookie makers are invited to bring their good- ies to Bruce Hall (in back of Cotuit Federated Church) after 2:30 p.m. Dec. 2 for sharing. Fresh greens and more in village The Unitarian Church of Barnstable includes a holiday luncheon and sale of the freshest greens in town at its Holiday Fair on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a boutique table, White Elephant table with bargains galore, a country store and children's gift table. Federated Church to host fair The Federated Church of Hyannis on Main Street will hold its Christ- mas Commons Fair on Friday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Spectacle of Trees benefits nonprofits Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers. Inc., along with the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerc e, John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum and Cape & Islands United Way, present "The Spectacle of Trees," a benefit for 14 local nonprofits , this Holiday Stroll weekend. The decorated trees will be displayed at the Kennedy Museum on Main Street, where bidding on them will commence Dec. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. and continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Winners will be an- nounced at 8 p.m. Santa Lucia Pageant The youth of First Lutheran Church. 1663 Route 6A in West Barnstable will present the Scandinavian story of Santa Lucia at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Dec. 10. All are welcome. Help for teen parents Cape Cod Child Development is currently accepting applications for enrollment in its Teen Parent pro- gram, available to parents 19 and younger. Conservatory offers classes Registration is open for the Cape Cod Conservatory Fine and Perform- ing Arts classes. Students of all ages are welcome. Holiday art workshops for kids in Cotuit Cotuit Center for the Arts. 4404 Rte. 28 in Cotuit , is offering a holiday workshop for children ages 6 to 12 on Saturday, Dec. 9. The first of two workshops. "Snowbound Sculptures" will have children make a model snow globe from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Then from 1 to 3 p.m. children will create one-of-a-kind holiday cards using coilage and printmaking techniques. The fee is $20 for one two-hour session of $35 for the day. Learn about the Coast Guard The U.S. Coast Guard Heritage Museum at the Trayser on Route 6A in Barnstable village presents the artifacts and stories of the life-saving service. CIGSYA is located at 56 Barnstable Road in Hyannis and serves people 22 and under. Circle for Youth meets from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays at the club house. If you haven 't tried Ab- bicci...make it an early New Year 's resolution to do so! CAST IRON ROASTED POTATO, MUSHROOM & LEEK CAKE 3 each 90 count Idaho 1 Cup Grated Parmesan Baker Potatoes 4 Tbsp. Olive Oil or 6 oz. mixed Wild Mushrooms rendered duck fat 2 Leeks - sliced thinl y Salt & Black Pepper to taste 1 Egg Preheat oven to 375 degrees & place seasoned 6" cast iron skillet in oven to heat for at least 10 minutes. Clean any debris off mushrooms with dry towel & slice. Saute in 2 Tbsp. olive oil or rendered duck fat - reserve, (irate potatoes into bowl, mix in mushrooms & remaining ingredients. Heat remaining oil or duck fat in skillet and add all of the potato mix into the skillet & brown on top of stove over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until golden brown. Invert on plate & slide back into skillet. Please into oven for 20 minutes , remove from pan and slice into 6 wedges. Serve with more grated cheese or creme fraiche if desired. This is a very versatile dish as it can be served as a tapas dish or as an accompaniment to many items such as poached eggs, grilled steak or veal chop. It will keep well under refrigeration lor 2 days and it reheats well.
