Barnstable Village
Stroll
Turn to Page B:5 for de-
tails of the Barnstable Vil-
lage Stroll
Centerville s
Old Fashioned
Christmas Stroll
From 4 to 7p.m. on Dec. 10,
Main Street will be closed to
traffic from Old Stage Road
to South Main Street,recreat-
ing the walking village at the
heart of Barnstable. Historic
homes willbe decorated with
wreaths and lights, making it
easy for strollers to imagine
they 've slipped into another
century.
There's fun up and down
the street,including strolling
carolers , performances by
the Barnstable High School
Christmas Band and Chorus
and the Dennis Yarmouth
High School ChristmasWinds
Choir, and some of your favor-
ites from Frosty the Snow-
man, Rudolf ,aNorth Pole elf,
and old Santa himself.
New sights will include a
bearcarver (we assumethat's
someone who carves bears as
opposed to an ursine artist),
an antique muster fire truck ,
and a Christmas village with
train display at Four Seas Ice
Cream. Therecreation build-
ing will have a crafts show, as
will the Centerville Library,
which will also welcome Pro-
fessor Readalot, who'll offer
magic and storytelling.
Other recommended in-
door stops include CHIPS
House and South Congrega-
tional Church for music as
wellasthe Centerville Histori-
cal Museum. The last-men-
tioned has many Christmas-
themed rooms to show how
the season was celebrated in
Colonial times,the 1870s and
the 1950s.
All that walking and lis-
tening is bound to make
you hungry, and you'll find
stations along Main Street
providing hot dogs, chowder,
hot chocolate,marshmallows.
and much more.
It's all free , and all are
welcome.
Christmas in Cotuit
Some downtown dwellers
might think a trip to Cotuit
is tantamount to visiting the
North Pole, but it'sreally not
that far to the enchanted sea-
side village that willcelebrat e
Christmas in Cotuit Dec. 2
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
AD day long, Freedom Hall
will host the 7'" Annual Holi-
day Arts & Crafts Festival, a
hefty helping of local artists'
work ranging from blown
glass sand pebble beads to
hand-colored photos, poetry
collages, gold and silver jew-
elry,hand-paintedChristmas
cards and more.
Many village institutions
will throw open their doors
for special programs. The
Cahoon Museum offers live
music and children's games
throughout the day, and
Bruce Hall at Cotuit Feder-
ated Church will be the site
of the sixth annual small
works art show and sale as
well as the Cotuit Women's
Fellowship theme gift bas-
kets sale.
Up at Lowell Park , the
Cotuit Kettleers ' store willbe
open for fans who can't wait
for the Cape Cod Baseball
League season to start (that
would be all of us).
The historical society will
throw a children's Yuletide
party from 10 a.m. to noon
and then open its gift shop
from 1 to 5 p.m. There's an
open house at the Mariner's
Lodge next to Freedom Hall
from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.
Hayrides start at the post
office beginningaround 12:30
and continue to 3:30 p.m.
The Cotuit Library will offer
a family cabaret show with
David Polansky from 2:30 to
3:30 p.m.
Then it's down to the town
dock at 3:45 to see Santa
arrive by boat, and back up
to the village green at 4 p.m.
for carols, a tree lighting,
and home-baked cookies at
Bruce Hall.
Osterville Village
Christmas Open
House & Stroll
They've been hosting this
party for 37 years, so you can
be sure they've got it right!
Osterville's homage to the
seasoncombinesthe charm of
shops in a seaside village with
the reverence of an outdoor
ecumenical creche service
that brings the whole pro-
ceedings to a halt for about
half an hour at 6 p.m.
Until then and after then
on Dec. 15. the stores will be
packed withshoppers taking
advantage of special offers.
the streets thronged with
people enjoying outdoor mu-
sicperformances or sampling
pizza, chowder, subs, soup,
and more.
There 'smuch to enjoy dur-
ing the day, but the heart of
the stroll is from 5 to 9 p.m.
on the 15"'. Main Street and
Wianno Avenue are turned
into car-free zones, and free
hayrides and trolley rides de-
light allages. Santa makes an
appearance at the Osterville
Village Library.
There 's an afterglow cel-
ebration on Saturday, the 16"',
during the day when outdoor
music will be presented again
and many of the stores will
hold open houses and offer
specials.
Don't forget to stroll down
to Armstrong-Kelley Park to
enjoy a festival of lights and
other treats .
West Barnstable
Village Green Tree
Lighting
The memorial evergreen
on West Barnstable village
green along Route 149 will
be lighted at 5 p.m. on Dec.
3 to the sound of seasonal
songs accompanied by the
Brentwood Brass.
Everyone's invited to the
1717 Meetinghouse just up
the hillto hear the Christmas
story and enjoy a concert by
the brass group, Babette
Bach playingthe newMander
organ, and the West Parish
Bell Choir.
There's a reception after-
ward at Jenkins Hall, all for
free. Organizers hope that
you'll remember to bring a
non-perishable food item to
donate to the Cape Cod Food
Pantry.
