Doors open at 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.... midnight. Thanksgiving gets short enough shrift from market- ers as it is. Supermarkets do the best because they have the most to gain. Other stores haven't figured out how to monetize Thanksgiv- ing and slip quickly, over- night in some instances, from Halloween to Christ- mas. The time creep to get doors open in ever-darker hours of the morning has had the same backward effect on bedtimes for those required to wait on the spending public. Time with family is necessarily cut short to rest up for the oncoming storm. And this will repeat itself on Dec. 25, after which doors will be thrown wide beginning at 5 a.m. the next day for returns and new con- sumption opportunities. As want of a parking permit turned friend against friend , so too do those waiting in line for door-bust- ingly cheap goods lose a bit of their humanity. There are enough examples of bad behavior to suggest the true spirit of the season arrives sometime after Black Friday. Are these opening times reflective of what consum- ers want from their retail- ers, or is it that retailers are simply trying to out-do their competition in an increas- ingly competitive world? It's a little and a lot of both. If people didn't show up, re- tailers wouldn't open early. But people do show up, likely in response to growing ad campaigns that tout the earlier and earlier times. It's a symbiotic relation- ship of questionable worth, but one caught in a spin that makes it difficult to see which is wagging which. The commercialization of the giving season has and will always be with us, and its boundaries are apt to get pushed further and become more extreme. The best we can do is hope for the day when retailers recognize this perpetual motion and declare that the prosper- ity of Black Friday will last forever. A list For Santa... Obviously, the CIA could be replaced by three guys in a room churn- ing out politically acceptable analysis.Could you move your toy making operation into the empty building, Santa? 4. While you're at it, Santa, there 's another financial re- quest you could handle for me. It's been over a decade that the finances at the De- partment of Defense have been in such disarray that our chief auditor, the Comptroller of the Currency, has refused to certify their statements. Might you get the DOD de- clared bankrupt so we could bring in an outside trustee to run it more efficiently and economically? 5. Santa, as a public ser- vice I wonder if you could ask Dunkin' Donuts to issue vouchers that would fill the hole in the prescription drug program, Medicare Part D? As some of us call it the donut hole, the publicity valuewould be considerable . Oh , and maybe you could also get the health care providers to givea rebate every time they change the terms of their plans and force us to wade through pages of fine print. 6. In the spirit of fair play, Santa, Iwish you would see to it that the members of Con- gress have the same health and retirement benefits as the rest of us instead of the gold plated packages they receive now. 7. Santa, I know it's a bit mean spirited of me, but I would appreciate it if you could transport all of the public figures who have called global warmingahoaxto houses (un- insured) located within half a mile of the coast at less than 20 feet of elevation. 8. Santa, did you know that Googleis spending millionsof dollars on research into solar energy ? They also provide free meals to their employees made from organically grown produce and hormone free meat. Perhaps you could put them in charge of our energy and environmental policy. They might do a pretty good job with health care and edu- cation as well. 9. I was wondering, Santa, if you could invite Theo Ep- stein and the Red Sox gen- eral managerial staff to the Nort h Pole for the weekend. So they wouldn't bother you at this busy time, maybe you could show them videos of Bronson Arroyo 's pitching performances side by side with shots of Willy Mo Pena playing the outfield. 10. And finally, Santa, could you make sure that everybody has a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season? Thank you. And then whitepeople get special privileges that non-whites don't. Maybe they get spe- cial tax breaks, maybe only their relationships (with each other and opposite sex only, of course!) would be recognized, though non- whites could get a "special" type of union that is called something different and doesn't include quite all the same privileges. Just because there are far more whites than non-whites in our commonwealth, does that mean I should be al- lowed to vote (as a white person) to deny others the privileges I have just be- cause of my race? No. Iknow the judicial branch of our government is the branch that protects the rights of those who are not the ma- jority and should never be subjected to a vote. I hope that people turn their focus to somethingthat actually affects them and most people here in Massa- chusetts (the tax roll back) and take their focus off their friends, family and neighbors whose marriage may be dif- ferent than theirs.
