luck dinner is offered following

Sturgis presents at
the High Schools
of the Future
Conference
Sturgis Charter Public
School was one of 12 schools
selected by the Massachu-
setts Department of Educa-
tion to present at the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation
sponsored "High Schools of
the Future" Conference in
Marlborough on Oct. 12.
The Sturgis presentation,
entitled "Ensuring College
Readiness:International Bac-
calaureate for All Students
in Grades 11-12", was given
by Arthur Pontes, Susan La-
Combe, Karin Walsh, Cindy
Gallo, Jo Mary Pontes and
Eric Hieser.
The workshop included
an overview of the "Inter-
national Baccalaureate for
All" program at Sturgis and
specific details about the aca-
demic expectations in Eng-
lish, History, Science, Math,
and Special Education. This
year, more than 300 teachers,
administrators, and educa-
tional leaders from across the
Commonwealth attended the
conference.

student named AP
Scholar
Sarah Gilliland of West
Barnstable qualified for the
APScholar withHonor Award
at Bishop Stang High School
during the 2005-2006 school
year. She is the daughter of
David and Theresa Gilliland
and is a freshman at Boston
College. The College Board
recognizes several levels of
achievement based on stu-
dents' performance on AP
exams. Students qualified for
the AP Scholar with Honor
Award by earning an average
grade of at lease 3.25 on allAP
exams taken, and grades of 3
or higher on four or more of
these exams.

student named
National Merit
scholar
Bishop Stang Academic
Principal Mary Ann Miskel
announced recently that Seth
Hayes was named a Com-
mended Student in the 2007
National Merit Scholarship
Program. Miskel presented
winning students, including
Hayes, with official Letters
of Commendation stating
"The students being named
Commended Students have
demonstrated outstand-
ing academic potential by
their strong performance
in this highly competitive
program." Seth, a resident of
West Barnstable, is the son
of Krista and Christopher
Hayes.
ALL members reveal
all in new calendar
The Academy for Lifelong
Learning (ALL), located on
the campus of Cape Cod Com-
munity College, held its an-
nual fall mixerin the school's
Grossman CommonsBuilding
on Nov. 5. The highlight of
the event was the display and
sale of the Academy's 2007
calendar titled "ALLCalendar
Boys." It features Academy
members in seasonal and
humorous (and au naturel)
poses.

National Merit
Scholar Winners at
Sturgis
Sturgis Charter Public
School recently had four
seniors recognized by the Na-
tional Merit Scholarship Cor-
poration for their outstanding
scores on the 2005 PSATtest.
MelanieDonahue, daughter of
Karen and Thomas Donahue,
was named a Semifinalist as
her scores placed her in the
top 1 percent of all students
in the U.S.
Sturgis also had three stu-
dents recognized as Com-
mended Students as they
scored in the top 5 percent.
The Commended students
were Kelly Denham, daughter
of Marianne Craddock; Mack-
enzie Moynihan, daughter of
Dee and Michael Moynihan;
and Michael Redgate, son of
Laurie and Russell Redgate.

Zen Center presents weekly
meditation
The Cape Cod Zen Center has weekly
meditation practice at the Unitarian Church of
Barnstable, Barnstable village on Route 6A.
The Tuesday morning group meets at 8 for
meditation in the RE area downstairs. There
is meditation instruction on Fridays at 6:40
p.m. in the library and a Friday Evening Group
meets in the library, behind the sanctuary, at
7 for meditation. There are also retreats, field
trips to the Providence Zen Center and monthly

Meditation offered for beginners
The Cape Sangha, a Zen Buddhist meditation
group, meets Sundays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at
