Pires dons his Navy uniform to participate in the Bennington,Vt. Battle Days festivities. USS BENNINGTON (COURTESY Of WWW USS-BENNINGTON ORG) DEDICATED - Memorial committee for the USS Bennington memorial to shipmates who died in May 1954 in a series of explosions on the ship. Memorial was dedicated in May 2004. (L-R) Joe Pires, Bill Collins, Graham Casserley and Coley McGowan. Joseph L. Pires of Osterville is busy man. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, he is a damage pre- vention representative for KeySpan Energy Delivery, the largest natural gas/electric utility company in the northeast United States. Evenings and weekends, he spends limit- less hours "Keep- ing Bennington's past -present," a phrase he coined in reference to the ship he once called home. From 1965 through 1969, Pires served as a 3rd Class Store- keeper in the Sup- ply Department (S-l Division) aboard aircraft carrier, USS Ben- nington. During his tour of duty, the Navy veteran was recipient of a number of military medals and citations, includ- ing the Meritorious Unit Citation Ribbon with a Bronze Star (for direct combat/support mission off Vietnam and the Apollo 4 Recovery), Navy Good Conduct Medal, National De- fense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three engagement Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Ribbon. Bennington Brief History The Bennington CV/CVA/CVS-20 was named for Bennington, Vt. and a major Revolutionary battle fought there in 1777. Built at the Brooklyn, N.Y.Navy Yard in 1944, she was the carrier of 103 planes, and was one of only 24 Essex- Class carriers ever built. Commissioned Feb. 26, 1944, she played a major role in military history during World War II and Vietnam. Decommissioned in January 1970, the Bennington was stricken from the Navy roster in 1989 and was sold for scrap. Her final voyage was Dec. 7, 1994 when she was towed to Aiang, India. Affectionately known as "Big Benn" by her shipmates, she is not forgotten by Pires and others who served their tours of duty aboard the aircraft carrier. Teamwork Pires is historian for the USS Bennington Association and for its multi-award-winning Web site, www.USSBen- nington.org. He and fellow veterans, Bill Copeland of Maynard, Mass. and the site's Webmaster, Lonnie Whittaker of Boulder, Mont, maintain the site. It has received numerous awards for pro- moting national patriotism and honor- ing the nation's military and veterans, and has been added to the archives in History Television's Wars and Conflicts section. Through the Web site, Pires receives numerous messages from those seek- ing information about the Bennington. Requests come from Bennington vet- erans, other military groups, families of those who served, and history buffs. He tries to respond in a timely manner - even when in-depth research is re- quired. He says there is nothing better than reaching out to connect former shipmates. Jaroslaw Brancewicz of Szczecinek , Poland wished to know the name of the commander of the Bennington in September 1967 when it was a re- covery ship during the NASA space unmanned mission Apollo - 4. Many requests come from those who lost loved ones during their tour of duty aboard the ship . The daughter of Lt. JG Charles Edward Hopper, a pilot who died in May 1954, wrote, "I am trying to reconnect with anyone who might have knowledge of this time period so I can share this with my children," Glenda Jackson also wanted to know more about her father, Lt. Billy Glen Jackson who died on board the Ben- nington. The father of Donna Hoey, Seaman Dominic J. Eovino, died in 1954. Hoey, of Lancaster, Calif., sought information that would help her younger brother, Tim, better know the man they called Dad. "I never like this part , as it has to do with the death of a loved one," Pires said. "Most are pleased to receive the information and say they finally have some closure after all these years! "That part makes me feel good. Coming through for them makes it all worth it for me. personally." In August , Pires was pleased to hear from Chad Callaghan, son of the ship's last Captain , William Callaghan Jr., now a retired admiral. Chad Callaghan wrote that his father was recently hos- pitalized but his health has improved and he is now home. "He was extremely impressed with the site and all of the work you have put into it ," Callahan wrote. "He wants to write a letter to you and the other shipmates to , hopefully, be published on the USS Bennington Web site." Pireswas also primary editor for The USS Bennington CV/CVA/CVS-20 His- tory Book published in 2004 by Turner Publishing Company.
