Google has never been
the only game in town. It
achieved its enviable market
leader status by delivering
a good product and steadily
improving it. Other search
engines, notably Yahoo!,
Ask.com, and Live Search,
a recent evolution of MSN
Search. These major engines
have characteristics distin-
guish them from each other.
Some of these characteris-
tics may be pertinent to the
information you seek or how
you prefer to look for it.
Google is the market's
800-lb gorilla. It is huge in
terms of searchable Web
objects but is shy about
disclosing its size in any way
that facilitates comparison.
In addition to Web pages, its
database includes .pdf files,
Word files, Excel spread-
sheets and PowerPoint
presentations.
However, overlap studies
have shown that only about
half the searchable Web can
be accessed by Google, so
getting a "second opinion"
is highlyrecommended.
Googleindexes the first 101
KB of a Web page and 120
KB of a .pdf file. A tilde (~)
before aword sometimes
finds synonyms.Youcan use
"double quotes"to search for
a phrase, and plus and minus
signs can be used to +include
or -exclude words in a search.
Google's Boolean capabilities
are limited.AND is assumed
between words. OR must
be capitalized. Parentheses,
either single or nested pairs,
work sporadically.Forinter-
national businesses, there
is a Translate this page link
that will translateEuropean
languages, Chinese, Japanese
and Korean to English.Find
Google at www.google.com.
Right now Yahoo!is
Google's only serious com-
petition for market lead-
ership. Initially a subject
directory of sites, Yahoo! is
now a search engine and a
portal in addition to its orig-
inal function. As a directory,
Yahoo!offers quick access
to a dictionary, synonyms,
patents, traffic, stocks, an
encyclopedia and more.
Yahoo!claims more than
20 billion total searchable
Web objects. It offers full
Boolean searching (AND,
OR, NOT, AND NOT and
parentheses). It indexes the
first 500KB of a Web page
-far better than Google's
101 KB -but includes some
pay-for-inclusion sites.
"Double quotes" will search
for a phrase, and plus and
minus signs can be used to
+include or -exclude words
in a search. A SafeSearch
filter excludes most adult
Web pages. It can be turned
on and off from a Prefer-
ences tab. Reach Yahoo's
main starting point at www.
yahoo.com; reach the search
engine at search.yahoo.com
and reach the directory at
dir.yahoo.com.
Live Search is a relative
newcomer, launched by
Microsoft in September 2006.
It features its own large, fresh
and unique Web database as
well as separate databases
for News, Images, Questions
and Answers, Local, Video,
Feeds and Academic. Live
Search offers full Boolean
searching. AND is not needed
because it is the default. Re-
sults are limited to html, .pdf,
Word (.doc and .rtf) Power-
Point and Excel.
There are other search
engines and directories,
but these have the power
and versatility to point you
toward all the information
you will need.
So in the final analysis,
which is the 'best' search
engine? The correct answer
is none of the above. A
truly thorough search would
require the resources of at
least two engines, prefer-
ably Yahoo! and Google, and
perhaps several directories ,
depending on what kind
of information is needed.
Happy hunting!

Election lessons...
CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:7
The lesson I learned here
is easy.First I learned
that you've got to recog-
nize a mistake. The sec-
ond and more important
lesson is applicable in
all management careers.
Once you admit that you
made a mistake, then
you absolutely must deal
with fixingthat mistake.
Now, the new orga-
nization isn't the same
old organization. The
change implemented by
the voters is significant.
The party in control of
the executive branch
recently enjoyed the
leadership and control
in both of the legislative
bodies. This election saw
the legislative leadership
swing to the opposition
party in both houses.
The change was radical.
It was seen as near im-
possible. This incredible
shift in control is more
remarkable as it comes
without the support of
the new Independent
Democrat.
Finally,the results of
this election can also be
tied to one other lesson.
The party that took it
on the chin the most
is the party of fiscal
control. This group has
been shaken to the roots
recently with both finan-
cial and moral scandals.
This lesson is simple. Be
honest and tell the truth.
If you lose, it's because
you were honest. There
is no better loss than an
honest one.
