The new face of
Sturgis Charter
Public School
By Kathleen Szmit

TRANSFORMATIONS - Eric Heiser,
executivedirectorof SturgisCharterPublic
School, celebrates the grand-reopening
of the school, which bears a new fagade
and sign following interior and exterior
renovations.
KATHLEEN SZMIT PHOTOS
SIGN OF THE TIMES - It's official. Sturgis Charter Public
School's new sign hangs proudly on the renovated facade
of the school building on Main Street in Hyannis.
It used to be that folks
strollingalongMain Street in
Hyannisin search of Sturgis
CharterPublic Schoolwould
walk onby,not realizingthat
the grimtwo-story structure
acrossfrom Artifacts was,in
fact, the school.
While the interior of the
building cheerily evoked all
thingsacademic and artistic,
the exterior still bore traces
of the former furniture store
that the building originally
housed.
Not anymore.
For the first time since its
inception in 1998, Sturgis
Charter Public School finally
bears the outward appear-
ance of a school, much to
the pleasure of Executive Di-
rector Eric Heiser. "We have
transformed the exteriorjust
as we transform your lives
inside,"Heiser told students,
faculty and state and local
dignitaries at the school's
official grand-reopening on
Oct. 27.
Olive Chase, president
of the board of trustees,
was an instrumental force
behind the renovations. "I
don't want you to ever say
that you go to school in an
abandoned furniture store
again," said Chase, noting
that it is what takes place
within the building that is
important. "We want more
of our students passing
more tests. We want more
Ivy League diplomas. We
want more of our students
to soar."
