COSTUME PRIZE AWARD
Hallowe'en was observed at the
Osterville Elementary School with
a parade by all the children
through the main street of the
village. The children, who were
dressed in costumes, were' accom-
panied by their teachers. Following
the parade a prize of a camera,
which was donated by Uarland
Wheeler, was awarded Bertll Mc-
lntyre, dtessed as a bathing beauty,
for the best.
Other costumes receiving honor-
able mention were Richard WalterB
as a girl; Carlton Crocker as a
lady; Karl Alttanleml as a chef ;
Manuel Vlerra as a girl ; Suzanne
Gallant and Diane Carlson as fat
girls; Kenneth Mainey, old fas-
hioned lady; Peter NileB, a modern
woman; Ann Lovell, a Fiji Island-;
er; Peter Nese and Bobby Sears,
girls; Gerald Delay, a Chinese
coolie ; Barbara Hopkins, a bath-
ing beauty; Carlton Carlson, a fat
woman, and Galrl Crosby,- a pirate.
Following the parade parties were
held In various classrooms.
GUILD PLAN8 FESTIVITIES
The second Fall meeting ot Our
Lady of Assumption Guild was held
Thursday night when plans were
completed for a bean and salad
supper next Saturday In Spruce
Tree Lodge. There will be two sit-
tings, at 6:30 and 6:30 p.m., with
Mrs. Jerome Bowes as chairman.
Plans also were outlined tor a
Christmas sale December 3rd in
the horticultural room of the Com-
munity Center. Serving on this
committee are Mrs. Dennis CUg-
gott, food; Mrs. John Bonner, gifts
and MrB. Roger Carlson and Mrs.
John Rafferty, religious articles.
Mrs. James F. Shields, Jr., was
named chairman of the annual
Christmas party for children of
the parish to be held December 11
at the Osterville Elementary
School. Assisting Mrs. Shields will
be Mmes. Francis A. Webb, Shir-
ley Crosby, Robert Sims, John
Linehan and Miss Mary Catherine
Cross. It was announced by Mrs.
Linehan, Guild president, that
three new members, Mrs. Bonner,
Mrs. John J. Linehan and Mrs.
Joseph Beecher have joined the
organization.
Following the business session,
a social program was held. It In-
cluded a pantry shower for the
Sisters and a radio quiz .program
with Mrs. Shields as quiz master.
She was assisted by Mrs. Clifford
Bonna. Among the contestants
yere Mmes. Jerome Bowes, Ger-
trude Childs, Robert Sims, John
Linehan, Daniel Leach and Ernest
Swift. Mrs. Bowes, who won flrst
prize, was awarded a bouquet of
flowers.
During the evening Miss Rose-
mary Lahteine played accordion
selections, and refreshments were
served by Mmes.. Francis Webb,
chairman, Frank Murray, William
Whlteley, Jr., Joseph Walsh, Jr.,
and Miss Elizabeth MacQuade.
The next meeting in December
will be followed by a Christmas
party for Guild members only.
STORK SHOWER
Mrs. Arnold Burch and Mrs.
Gordon Fuller were guests at a
surprise shower in the home of
Mrs. Frederick Sanborn. Guests
were Mmes. Muriel Turner, Dana
Marston, Elspeth Hall, Dorothy
Mott, Lillian Whitehead, Mrs.
Walter I. Fuller, Roger Johnson,
Mrs. Joner, Mrs. Laird, Harold
Gilford and Miss Virginia Fuller.
Refreshments of ice cream and
cake and coffee were served. Each
guest received a cake with a baby
doll.
SCOUT COUNCIL
Mrs. Deiton Hall , chairman of
the Girl Scout Committee, an-
nounces that Mmes. John Linehan,
Shirley Crosby, James Hansberry ,
and Ralph Lagergren are new
members of the Council. Other
members are Mmes. John F.
Shields, Hay Bruce Reld, Frank
Hansen and Thomas Milne.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Osterville Historical Society
held a penny sale on Nov. 2nd In
the Pariah House. The sale was a
great success financially anl a good
time was had by all who partici-
pated. About $36 was realized
from this sale.
There were many lovely articles
donated, Among, the most out-
standing was a picture painted by
Dr. Fritz Talbot ot Wianno deplet-
ing a lovely boat which he painted
here in Osterville. Many other
things such as old glass, old coins
and stamps were given by Miss
Mildred Sawyer of Osterville; also
given by various members and
friends were canned goods, food,
hurricane lamps, Christmas tree
decorations, (Christmas tree deco-
rations were lovely large pine"
cones brought from the South and
dipped in silver, which Mrs. Ger-
trude Springer had done herself
and donated). Also given was an
almost new golf bag which caught
the eye of all men present . Mrs.
Charlotte Tallman won the picture
by Dr. Talbot.
An added feature of the evening
was the guessing of the weight of
a cake made by Miss Sarah Boult.
The nearest guess was made by
Robert Chase, who won the cake.
The Osterville Historical Society
hopes to purchase an old house in
the village in the near future to
house all the things which are ot
great interest historically to Os-
terville. All things iiave been
stored temporarily since the lire in
the Community Center Building
where the society had a room for
several years. All persons interest-
ed In the future of this society are
urged to attend meetings.
The committee In charge of the
penny sale, Miss Harriet Chace,
Mrs. Burleigh Leonard and Mrs.
Cyril Hall wish to thank all those
who so willingly gave to make this
sale such a great success.
DIACON FETED
Sixty-six friends of Deacon
Charles Jones gathered In the
vestry of the Baptist Church here !
to honor him on his 90th birthday |
anniversary. Mr. Jones, who joined
the church In 1887 and has been a 1
deacon since 1914 was presented a
purse from his friends. Among
those who greeted Mr. JoneB was
Mrs. Annie Hodges, who will he
90 in April.
Ronald Chesbro opened the pro-
gram with words of greeting,
which were followed by a prayer
by Mrs. Hazen C. MacDonald. Mrs.
Everett LewiB of West Yarmouth '
presented the purse on behalf of
the group to Mr. Jones, who '
responded, |
Also included on the program
were vocal selections by Walter
I. Fuller and Louis Williams. An '
original poem written for Mr.
Jones was read by William p!|
Hodges. Also read by Mrs. Lewis
was a poem written by Dr. Isaac ]
Hlgglnbotham of Boston. Miss
Bernice Chadwlck and Mrs. Lewis
were in charge of arrangements.
WOMAN'S ALLIANCE
At the monthly business meet-
ing of the Woman's Alliance of
the Community Church, $75 was
voted to the church; $lo to the
District Nursing Association , and
$5 to the Boy Scouts. A panel dis-
cussion on the duties of a com-
mittee chairman was conducted ,
with Mmes. Peter Palches, Charles
Towers and Thomas Milne , partici-
pating. The business meeting was
preceded by a covered dish
luncheon arranged by Mines. John
HankB , John A. Hanson and Fred
MoLane. The next meeting at 2:00
p.m. Wednesday in the Parish
House to sew on articles for the
Christmas sale.
RADIO QUIZ PROGRAM
The socand Pall meeting of Our
Lady of Assumption Guild was held
last Thursday In the Cenacle, the
business session followed by a
radio quiz program under tho di-
rection of Mrs. James F, Shields,,
Jr., nnd MrB. Clifford Bonna.
Other entertainment Included ac-
cordion selections by Aff HH Rose-
mary Lahteine , und refreshments
were served.
PRIZE WINNER
Margot Reid , daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Hay Bruce Reld was
awarded flrst prize of $26 in the
Safety Jingle contest sponsored by
Radio Station WOCB, West Yar-
mouth.
The girl is a student in the 6th
grade at Osterville school. Her
winning jingle was:—
"1-0-2 could be you,
Watch the highway, not the
view. "
CHICKEN PIE SUPPER
A chicken pie supper will be
served November 17 by the Tri-F
Club of Osterville Baptist Church
In the vestry. There will be two
sittings, 5:16 and 6:15 p.m. tickets
being limited to 100. Mrs. Ronald
Chesbro was named chairman of
tho committee assisted by Mrs.
Robert Hinckley, Mrs. Francis
Allen , Mrs. Leonard Cloud and Miss
Elsie Chadwlck.

DINNER PARTY
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Thomas en-
tertaine d at a dinner party In honor
of their son, George Thomas and
his son, Lieut. Selhy Thomas of
South Orange, N. J., who has been
here for a visit. Other guests In-
cluded tholr son and daughter-iii-
luw , Mr. and Mrs. J. Harold
Thomas of Barnstable, and tholr
son-in-law and daughter , Mr. and
Mrs. Lloyd MncLean and daughter ,
Janet or Sandwich. Lieut. Thomas
has just left for Japan to he gone
three years.

Robert; Lee and Ann Shields, all
Hyannls; Raymond Dumas of Sand-
wlch. Children who left tho school
are Bonnie Brown, who bus moved
to Georgia, and Robert Walters ,
who has entered school In Barn-
stable.
RUMMAGE PROCEEDS
The sum of $62 was netted from
the rummage sale sponsored by the
Community Club. Mrs. Cyril Hall
chairman, and her committee thank
those who contributed to the suc-
cess ot tho sale.
