that led him in all his beliefs and
actions, public and private.
Nineteenth Century America
was the time and place of almost
innumerable endeavors of social
reform: abolition of slavery,
women's rights, treatment of
prisoners , care of the physically
and the mentally ill, temper-
ance, working conditions , et al,
almost ad infinitum. In 1840,
in Boston, of course, there was
held a convention of people who,
with wonderful enthusiasm and
optimism, called themselves
"Friends of Universal Reform."
To the best of this reviewer's
knowledge Spear was not there,
but he ought to have been.
He felt called, indeed driven,
to cure the ill, counsel the trou-
bled, encourage the discouraged,
organize the disorganized. He
clearly and firmly believed that
he was acting under the direc-
tion of the spirits of prominent
people of the past, each advising
about a matter in which he or
she had been a generally recog-
nized authority. Always insisting
that he was not the author but
merely the instrument through •
whom these opinions were given,
Spear spoke for many causes
that now are almost universally
accepted as right and good, such
as the abolition of slavery; for
some, causes that are even now
controversial, such as women's
right to choose whether or not
to terminate a pregnancy; for
some that were then and now
are seen by almost everyone as
wildly impractical, such as build-
ing a perpetual motion machine,
or definitely detrimental, such
as "free love." Never bowing to
public opinion or the advice
of associates, he continued to
follow the advice of his spirit
guides and to find emotional and
financial support until his life in
this material world came to an
end.
John Benedict Buescher has
done a good and significant ser-
vice in recording for us and for
posterity the life of a man who
seems to have found it difficult
to distinguish between good and
bad, right and wrong, feasible
and practicable , and record-
ing for us the problems human
society has had and yet has in
making such distinctions.
The Remarkable Life of John Murray Spear...

parents have recently
moved to Florida and his
sister is living in Califor-
nia, but mostly because
the grandfolks just plain
like having members of la
familia around. After all,
the family mantra is Fam-
ily, Faith and Food, a credo
the older generation ad-
heres to with great pride
and dogged devotion.
Still a bachelor at 35,
Grandma Emma Cris-
tano (Millie Sheerin) joins
forces with Aida to devise
a scheme whereby they
will introduce Nick to a
fine young lass, nurse Cait-
lin O'Hare (Anne Vohs),
with whom they hope
Nick will fall in love, thus
making the move a moot
point. After all, he has
admitted to the family he
has "no reason to stay." In
their minds, love for a fine
woman will give him a rea-
son. The husbands, retired
carpenter Frank Gianelli
(Bob Nuss) and retired
assembly fine worker
Nunzio Cristano (Kenneth
Nardone), agree with the
plan and put on their best
faces for a Sunday dinner
at which Caitlin will be
the featured guest, unbe-
knownst to Nick.
It is at this Sunday
dinner that Nick's angst
at being manipulated
brings on a panic attack
that changes his life for-
ever.Through his trauma,
however, he gathers the
strength he needs to pur-
sue his dreams and move
on in his life, leaving be-
hind some scars but a love
that manages to traverse
the country, along with
some hearty food, and
endure, albeit with some
bittersweet endings.
Directed by Kay DeFord,
president of the Guild, this
comedy is full of poignant
moments and revelations
from the elders that bring
to the forefront the power
of a united family where
strength is derived from
those who have sacrificed
to create a staunch unit
that only gains momentum
and success as the genera-
tions progress.
DeFord also designed
the set, which is an invita-
tion to step on stage to
take part in a meal or have
a he-down on the comfy
couch. Authentic and wel-
coming, this venue does
not require any suspension
of disbelief; it is anyone's
living and dining room
where family life goes on
despite the challenges and
disruptions the days bring.
Costumes by Nonnie
Kelly-Perkes and Betty
Marshall are authentic
and particularly pleasing
on Emma, who sports chic
outfits as befit her hip
interpretation of an older
granny not ready to throw
in the towel for some old-
lady garb.
Joe DiPietro's Over
the River and Through
the Woods is a lively high
befitting the kickoff of the
Guild's 75th season and
is presented by a veteran
cast who perform pitch-
perfect.
Pertormances ot Over the River
and Through the Woods will be pre-
sented through Nov. 19 on Thursday,
Friday and Satuday at 8 p.m. and
Nov. 5, 12,and 19 at 2 p.m. For
tickets ($16; $10 students under
18), call 508-945-0510.
