THEVILLAGES Collection celebrates history of Our Lady of Victory/Our Lady of Hope By Brad Lynch news@barnstablepatriot.com A cookbook of 400 recipes compiled by past presidents of Our Lady of Victory/Our Lady of Hope Women's Guild is the latest secular celebra- tion leading up to the 50th anniversary of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville next year. Cooking with Hope and Victory is lots more than a cookbook. With handsome cover paintings of the Centerville church and West Barnstable chapel by artist Marge Keary and illustrations throughout of Cape and Nantucket homes by artist Ann Corbett, the book also covers bytes of Cape Cod history and lore (e.g.: "Falmouth has 13town beaches and three light- houses.") Readers also are reminded that ground breaking for Our Lady of Victory Church was held in February 1957 on land presented to the church by Dr.Herbert Kalmus, a longtime summer resident of Cenerville and a well known movie industry personage in Hollywood. Kalmus was the inventor of Technicolor film and headed Technicolor Corporation of America. He is also remembered for his gift of Kalmus Beach to the Town of Barnstable. Our Lady of Hope Mis- sion Chapel was built in 1915 from plans by the renowned church architects Maginnis and Walsh of Boston. Look for some of their famous work on your next trip to New York. They conceived and executed the great bronze doors to St. Patrick's Cathedral on FifthAvenue. Our Lady of Hope is one of the relatively few Catho- lic churches on the Cape made of brick. The West Barnstable brick company was across the Old King's Highway from Our Lady of Hope, and to accommodate its labor force, management sold bricks to its workers at cost, so that the Irish, Italian and Portuguese immigrants could build their church. Also as an accommoda- tion, one contributor to the new cookbook said she found a commonthread in many of the recipes in Cooking with Hope and Victory. She noticed that many of the reci- pes have ingredients that are easy to find in the home re- frigerator or larder. They are ingredients that households are apt to have on hand, often packaged or canned and easy to find. Not that the best foods, the fresh ones, are neglected. They are in the book, as they should be in these times of being fearful of calories, sugars, additives and obesity. Here there's somethingfor gourmands on both sides of the aisle. Foreign foods are abun- dant; consider the recipes for Japanese ginger chicken P wings, Chinese cabbage salad, Greek soup, Misosouffi ' Argentina meat roll, Marzettt.- Faithful chop suey,English § toad-in-the-hole, cheesy Kielbasa, European pork cake. There's even someone's , magnum opus called (no kid-, ding) Martini Stew. Cookingwith Hopeand Victory ($15) can be purchased at the parish office in Centerville on weekdays, after Mass on Sundays, and at the Our Lady of Victory Harvest Fair Nov. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Nov. 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other sale points include the 1856 Country Store and Cape Cod Cookery inCenterville, and Yankee Accent and Oyster Island Emporium in Osterville.
