Barnstable's waiting
to schedule clinics
By Bethany Gibbons
news@barnstablepatriot.com
The
call came in just this
past Monday from the
state. The flu vaccine that
Barnstable has been waiting
for will arrive a month late. As
November begins, bringing the
inevitable advent of flu season
that much nearer, local health
care professionals are comforting
residents that the coveted vaccine
will be available.
Rita Mitchell, R.N., from the
Barnstable County Department
of Health and the Environment, is
one of those charged with man-
aging the portions of flu vaccine
the state allots to various areas.
"There is going to be enough vac-
cine this year, but it's coming out
later," she said. "People need to be
reassured that it's not too late to
get a flu shot in December, Janu-
ary or even later."
The VisitingNurses Association
of Cape Cod also follows the trail
of flu vaccine to the region. "We
are actually the contracted town
nurse for 13 of the 15towns on the
Cape," said Director of Marketing
Jean Sarnowski. "Every town sets
its own schedule, lets us know,
and we are there to distribute the
vaccine."
Sarnowski echoed Mitchell's
soothing remarks. "We're not hav-
. ing any trouble with availability
this year," she said. "Allthe clinics
are going smoothly and we haven't
had any people waiting in line or
being turned away."
According to the federal Centers
for Disease Control, "Every year
in the United States, on average
5% to 20% of the population gets
the flu, more than 200,000 people
are hospitalized from flu compli-
cations, and about 36,000 people
die from flu. Some people, such as
older people, young children, and
people with certain health condi-
tions, are at high risk for serious
flu complications." While waiting
for a chance to receive the recom-
mended vaccine, simple practices
can prevent catching and spread-
ing the dangerous bug.
"We really need to stress fre-
quent hand washing," said Mitch-
ell. With the increased popularity
of fast food, lunches and snacks
on the go, remembering to wash
hands before putting them on food
or near the face is of great impor-
tance. "We also stress good cough
etiquette, which involves cough-
ing into a tissue and away from
people," said Mitchell. As always,
those experiencing flu symptoms
should refrain, if possible, from go-
ing to work or leaving the house to
shop or do other errands that put
them in contact with other people.
The dreaded symptoms of the
flu, for those fortunat e enough to
not know them intimately,include,
according to the CDC, "Fever
(usually high), headache, extreme
tiredness, dry cough, runny or
stuffy nose, muscle aches, sore
throat. Stomach symptoms, such
as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea,
also can occur but are more com-
mon in children than adults."
Flu clinics are already sched-
uled for those hoping to avoid
those symptoms this year. The
Barnstable Health Department
will wait for the vaccine's arrival to
schedule clinics, but those clinics
will be advertised in this publica-
tion, as well as in local newspa-
pers. Interested residents can call
the Barnstable Health Depart-
ment at 508-862-4644.
The VNA of Cape Cod has a
flu clinic scheduled for Dec. 6 at
the YMCA on Route 132 in West
Barnstable. This clinic is open to
the public regardless of residency.
Some town flu clinics require
participants to be residents of
the town, others are open only to
seniors and people with chronic
health conditions. While the VNA
clinic is open to all, the fee is $35
dollars for those without Medicare
Plan B. Barnstable Health Depart-
ment last year charged $3 dollars
for a flu shot, with Medicare ac-
cepted, and they expect to charge
the same fee this year.
For a comprehensive list of flu
clinics in Massachusetts, visit
http://flu.masspro.org, or call your
local town health department for
an updated list. The VNA offers
a "flu line" with a list of clinics at
1-877-267-7200.
