It
has been 28 weeks since it was my turn in the Coun-
cilor column rotation given to the four Councilors
who live in Hyannis. Obviously, readers of the Patriot
are accustomed to this "Village" page and the rotation
of our seven villages. Interestingly, Councilors from less
populated villages whose precinct covers the entire vil-
lage are asked to write to you every seven weeks, while
conversely, if a Councilor lives in Centerville they have a
column every 21 weeks and if they live in Marstons Mills
they are assigned a column space every 14 weeks.
The reason I raise this point is to illustrate the ineq-
uity that exists among your representatives' ability to
communicate with you in this forum. Does the thought
process mean that the readers only read about their own
village? I hope not.... I feel I am among many who love
living here, not simply due to our immediate surround-
ings but due to a deep affection for all of Barnstable.
I greatly appreciate the Barnstable Patriot provid-
ing this communication outlet for your elected town
councilors. I hope this opportunity continues creating a
dialogue between Barnstable residents and Councilors.
Perhaps additional venues in this paper and the Patriot's
sister paper, the Cape Cod Times, could be made avail-
able to enhance our opportunities to communicate with
you as your town Councilors.
Hopefully, the one councilor choosing not to par-
ticipate in "From Your Councilor" may reconsider the
immense value of any opportunity to communicate with
all Barnstable residents. I'm constantly reminded by the
dynamics of our precinct-based charter of the profound
importance of our oath of office. The oath deliberately
makes no mention of villages or precincts; instead, it
speaks to our solemn obligation to serve in the best in-
terests of all Barnstable residents.
Missing Eugenia
Since my last time writing in these pages, we very sadly
lost "Barnstable's Conscience" ... Eugenia Fortes. I miss
her immensely. Eugenia was a role model, mentor and a
friend of mine. I feel so fortunate to have sat with her on
many occasions in her living room listening to her many
Cape Cod stories about her experiences like fighting
