pines, mere is social life together
at tens, dances, entertainments ,
where discussions sometimes last
fur into the night on comparative
religion or a search for codes based
on concepts of respect for human
personality or kindred subjects
was constantly carried on. Topics
of the day are seen In new light ,
when viewed by vurious nationali-
ties from ideological bases.
We realized that material for a
pattern for world understanding
was ready at our hands. We recog-
nized the smallest of the world
and it became as intimate as our
own living room. A hundred years
ago it might not have mattered in
Centerville what was happening in
China. Today, with communication ,
transportation , and all science
bringing us close together, It is as
if it happened next door. In life
at the International House, one
way of emphasizing this has been
found and , also, of telescoping the
time necessary to reach interna-
tional understanding and good will.
Only by bringing " the process ot
human understanding down to an
individual and practical basis
can progresa be made,
It is the fashion with Bome to de-
ride the efforts ot the U.N.E.S.C.O.,
Just as some people laughed at the
beginnings of the League of Na-
tions. Mrs. Prancesca Wilson
states in her new book, "After-
math", "Peace will only work when
people have practical Jobs to do
together. When we are in a hurry
to get sand pits and seesaws made
for kindergartens or a stage for a
theatr e, we think only of the car-
penter 's skill and not ot his per-
sonality."
Thus, in working together at
international House, we experience
the cooperation that is the basis
for u possible future world , which
will recognize the dignity and
worth of all human beings, regard-
less of race, color or creed , in a
complex which has become greatly
integrated. A resident' here gains
a sympathy, understanding and re-
spect with and for the rest of the
world , which can have far-reaching
results, even as an Imponderable.
