our 9th anniversary.
For those of you readers
who are not familiar with
supportive day programs, a
brief description may help:
an adult supportive day pro-
gram provides a safe, struc-
tured, and active environ-
ment for seniors who cannot
or do not want to stay home
alone during the day. Some
seniors may find themselves
socially isolated because
they no longer drive, or may
be experiencing age-related
physical or cognitive limita-
tions; many may also have
a diagnosis of dementia or
Alzheimer's.
Supportive day programs
are non-medical models
staffed by trained profes-
sionals who provide care
and supportive program-
ming to elders. Programs
are designed to engage
seniors in maintaining cog-
nitive and physical abilities.
Programming often includes
physical, social, and educa-
tional activities such as light
exercise, current events
discussion, art, music, and
entert ainment. In addition,
a supportive day program
provides much needed re-
spite for caregivers, a key to
relieving stress on the family
as a whole.
The Barnstable Adult
Supportive Day Program,
a service of the Town of
Barnstable's Senior Ser-
vices Division, is located in
Centerville and operates
Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
program provides a nutri-
tious lunch, transportation
services when necessary,is
supported by sliding scale
fees based on income, and
offers a free trial day after
an initial assessment is
completed.
Looking back to Septem-
ber 1998, the day we first
opened our doors to four
elders and their caregivers ,
we have come to understand
that trust is the key ingredi-
ent that makes our program
so successful. It is impor-
tant that families trust our
program to provide a safe,
comfortable, and engaging
environment for their loved
one.
Today, we have more
than 30 seniors enrolled in
our Adult Supportive Day
Program, and have earned
the right to celebrate. The
moment a caregiver, family
member, or friend discovers
our program and gives us
a phone call, the relation-
ship begins and together we
build on a plan to support
seniors ancUheir caregivers
who deserve support from
their community in the town
of Barnstable.
So, if you are a caregiver
or know of someone who
needs support in caring for
a senior, please join us to
celebrate our 9th anniver-
sary. Come learn more about
what your community has to
offer you.
The Barnstable Adult
Supportive Day Program's
9th Anniversary Open House
will be Oct. 25 from 3:30 p.m.
to 6 p.m. at 524 Main St.,
Centerville. Refreshments
will be served. RSVP to 508-
862-4750.
This year, the supportive
day programs in Bourne ,
Eastham, and Wareham are
holding simultaneous open
houses so we can get the
word out in a collaborative
manner. Please plan on stop-
ping by to take a tour and to
meet the staff.
We are also offering an
incredibly interesting
five-week class here at the
Center called "Creating Life
Goals That Rock Your Socks
Off" with a life coach. This
is a follow up to one of our
monthly 3"' age chats where
boomers have been meeting
to have conversations about
the next stage of their lives.
In the five sessions, people
will be helped to identify
goals for their lives that they
feel passionate about , and
then each participant will
create a concrete plan to
attain their goals.
Session 1: Distinguishing
Rockin' Goals vs. Shoulds
(why bother with a goal that
doesn't excite you?) Oct. 26
Session 2: Exploring
Dreams & Possibilities
(what are your fantasies and
secret desires?) Nov. 7
Session 3: Choosing a
Goal with "Your Name on It"
(let's play with one that gets
your juices going!) Nov. 11
Session 4: Getting Real
(planning action steps and
learning some tools for over-
coming obstacles) Dec. 7
Session 5: Celebrating
Your Rockin' Goal (keeping
it alive and growing!) Dec.
14
The five-week seminar is
only $99 (less then $10.00
an hour!) and will definitely
make you feel like you have
taken control of your life .
Space is limited and you
must register by Oct. 23 at
the Senior Center. For more
information call the Center
or go to www.treehou.ser-
etreats.com.
