A PUMPKIN DELIGHT- Cape visitors (l-r) Elise Low,4,andJordan

coloring contest during Osterville s Fall Festival day Saturday.
A SPOOKY EXPERIENCE - Lyndie Colburn of Upstairs Imports
created this fun display infront of her store with authentic looking
rats, crows, spiders and even askeleton to start off the Halloween
season. It was a big hit and created a big stir with many of the
children at Osterville 's Fall Festival day.

estimate is that nearly half
of the people who occupy
the hospital's 225 beds are
Catholics.
Father David, tall, stocky,
with dark hair and blue eyes,
moves fast through the hospi-
tal, with a ready smile for the
people he passes. He is very
much part of the life of this
acute-care hospital, the third
largest in the Catholic diocese
of Fall River, after St. Luke's
in New Bedford and catching
up with Charlton Hospital of
Fall River. He talks candidly
about personal feelings in a
45-minute interview, during
which he roams over varied
subjects.
He thinks "the world" of
his hospital and especially its
people - the doctors, nurses,
clericals, technicians. He sees
them allascompetent,welcom-
ing and friendly. He's proud
to be part of the place. He is
equally pleased by the talents
and human skillsof his Catholic
religiousaids. Mostly part-time,
they include in all two priests,
a Catholic lay chaplain and a
deacon.
"I think God has a sense of
humor," the young priest says,
recalling the phone call from
Bishop George W. Coleman
askingifhe'd Liketo be chaplain
at the hospital which is near his
hometown of Harwich, instead
of the more distant spot he had
imagined, like Attleboro.
As a boy, Frederici wanted
to be a teacher and work with
young people. In his last posi-
tion as a parochial vicar or
curate at Our Lady of Victory
Church in Centerville, he had
responsibility for the youth
ministry at that large parish.
He holds a national governing
position with the Boy Scouts of
America,and Girl Scoutstoo,as
an advisor to Scouting'sCatho-
lic organization that works with
families, churches, Scouts and
their leaders on policy and
performance
He likes working with older
people now and has more op-
portunity to help them at the
hospital. The most emotionally
moving experience he has had
was before the death of alonely
75-year-old man who died soon
after hiswife.The two had been
sweethearts since childhood.
Before his ordination, Fred-
erici was nervous about his
abilities to learn about wed-
dings and marriage counseling.
He hasn't had a wedding of a
patient yet, but three young
people have askedhimto marry
them in the hospital chapel. He
was delighted. Before taking
on the hospital job , he was ap-
prehensive about confronting
the pain of people whose lives
and health are imperiled. But
he returned to hislight-hearted
self in answering another ques-
tion,"What'sthe most terrifying
experience you've had in your
hospital life?" with the state-
ment,"Well,I've alwaysdreaded
paper work."
The staff of 1,700 at the
hospital are as much his pa-
rishioners as the patients. The
hospital's mission in this area
is "To promote a ministry of
compassion and inspiration
for staff, patients and families
of all faiths."
Don't clutter your head with
visions of sirens screaming and
people inRomancollarschasing
gurneys. The operative idea is
for the chaplain to "be there."
In itsstatementsabout pastoral
activity.Cape Cod Hospital and
its Catholic chaplain recognize
aspiritual power in religionand
religious people that is trans-
mitted to and from the caregiver
and the patient. In the corner
of an operating room or by a
bedside there may be an aura
of quiet compassion.
Some times it's recognized
in a glance at a relative of the
patient , a murmur of love and
care, or the offer, "Can I bring
you acup of coffee?" Again,just
"being there."It'salsopowerful
energies and powerful prayer
focused on recovery,well-being
and health.
Frederici points out that the
government agency that over-
seeshospitals setsstandards for
encouraging the spiritual role
in health care. Hospitals have
come to be convinced that they
should encourage the spiritual
recovery if they are to help their
patients to live and be well.
