Doing thlngB for other people started Mrs. Howard Tracy ot West Dennis on her interesting hobby und flourishing business. Seated in a little workshop at tho roar of her home Mrs. Tracy paints and redecorates all kinds of articles. Shelves are piled high with knife boxes, wooden sugar buckets , tin trays, antique tin ot every description. Around the room are old commodes, chairs, cran- berry pickers, flatlrons and many other articles. Here is the veritable treasure chest! lu front ot Mrs. Tracy Is a low bench where tubes of paint are laid ready for a day 's work. Mrs.. Tracy has already experi- mented with colors, sketchings this and druwlng that. Her antique tole ware is very popular. Tole ware was Invented us an Inexpensive substitute for costly lacquered ware. Oriental lacquered ware wus beyond the means of many admir- ers, so experiments were carried on In Wales, England, about 10(10. Finally a superior vurnlsh was per- fected. This, however, did not prove successful when used on wood. Later it was discovered that tills new varnish worked' to perfection on tin. This painted tin wus called "Tole Ware". Much of it was exported to America in the early 1800'a. It became so popular that tin ware factories were set up In New Eng- land , Pennsylvania and later in Ohio. The characteristic deslgnH on these pieces Indicate their places of origin. Leaving the tole ware , we come to a group ot castoff commodes. At one time they wore tucked away In a barn or attic. Today they have been revived , Mrs. Tracy re- decorates them In gay colors with floral designs or "l'etor Hunt" docoratloiiB. Some are used as burs, others as dressing tables. The stenciled knife boxes have come Into their own once more. Some are finished In naturul wood with a soft painted fruit design, others painted in gay colors with an in- teresting stencil. The sugar bucket that once was tucked awuy In the family pantry lias now taken on u new lease of life with colorful designs, perhaps being used for knitting or maga- zines. The chopping bowl , currying a fruit design , finds Itself now serving delicious salads for par- ties. Waiting for Its turn to be re- finished Is a beautiful old secretary for some lovel y Cape Cod homo. Mrs. Trucoy Amis much pleasure in her business as an outstanding Interior decorator, a vocation that started and remains nn Interest- ing hobby. Talk About Hobbies! October is here with magic brush And colors of every hue, To paint the landscape in gorgeous tones Under skies cerulean blue. The golden oaks arc twined with gay vines, And maples have radiant tints, Birch trees are yellow , the pines somber green, The sumach's red candle glints. The meadows are shaded in ochre and brown On them plumes of tall rood grass wave ; And beyond , the white sand dunes shine As upon them the sea waters lave. Cal-tails erect, guard lowland swamps, A regiment dressed in brown , The milkweed pods have now begun To show each silken gown. The berries on black alder shrubs Are turning Christmas red, The summer birds and btttterflics To southern homes have fled. The cranberry bogs have all been gleaned , October tints the vines; The sun is deeped red and gold As the season 's day declines. There 's quiet and peace on old Cape Cod In autumn 's amber days, Come visit it at any time For beauty along its ways.
