[Concluded.] The age of Mr, Mayo at his decease is not known , but ho was said to ha "very old," and born probabl y bofi.ro the year J600 ; neither can it now be point- ed out the place of his burial. Tradition says ho was-born in England., and emi grated to Plymouth Colony on account of the government persecutions iigu inst the Puritans. That he was a graduate of some College in Eng land , tliere can be no doubt , fro m the faet that the earl y settlers of Massachusetts having , above ijll things else, a most watchfu l and pious regard for the spiritual welfare of the churches , woul d never allow the settling,as Pastor of a church , of any porspn unless he was a highly educate d man. His daug hter Hannah Mayo was married to Na- t 'uiniel Bapon , in Barnstable , Dec. 4, 1642,and while Mr. Mayo was Teacher there. Her children were Hannah , born 1643 ; Nathaniel , 1645 ; Mary, 1648; Samuel, 1650 ; Elizabeth, 1653 ; Jeremiah, 1G57 ; Mercy, 1659 , and John , ]GC1. ! Joseph Howes, of Yarmouth , who signs the agree- ment and settlement to the estate of M.r. .John Mayo in 167Q, as one *'of the parties concerned" therein , probabl y married Elizabeth , another daug hter of John Mayo , and sheboin< » alive at that time would , with PJanni ih Bacon and John Mayo, make "the llwee surviving childre n " referred to in that settle- ment ; and what makes this probability still more cerlain that there was this relationshi p between these families , is t hat Joseph Howes , of Yarmouth , in his Will dated Jan. 17 , 1095 , concludes as follows , "and I des ire my loving brothers , Jeremiah Howes and John Mayo to be overseers , to take care of , advise tin d keep for performin g of this my last Will and Testament. " lit? therein appoints his wife. Eliza- bet h , and Ijis sop Josep h , executors of his will. The children of this Josep h and Elizabeth IIowps were Samuel, Joseph, John, Nathaniel, Thomas, Amos, Mary, Elizabeth and Hannah. Elizabeth , (lie wife of Joseph Howe?, of Yarmouth , died 1701, then n widow. Samukl May q, sop of Rev. John Mayo, was ong of the first settlers of Barnstable ,and was ther e while his father vyas Teacher there ; was one of those able to bear arms in 16 ,43 , and in the Fall ol 1653, he removec) from Barnstable to Qyest .er I|av, on Lotm Island , in company wijhs onte others from that town. Some account of this removal inav be found in Hazard's Collection of State Papers , where it is mentioned that "the vessel which broug ht Mr. Lev- isr id ge ljere (Oyester Bay) belonged to Cap tain Thomas Willctte , Samuel Mayo, Will iam Padd y and John Barnes , of Barnstable : ami as war then prevailed between the Eng lish and Ijutch in Europe she wjis taken while in the Dutch lim itp jhaving gone to Ilampsteat) harbor arid landed fheir cattle and goods, because there $»a$ no house creeled tit pyes- ter Bay in which they could be received." Thompson , in his history pf Long Island , says " The first permanent settlement pf .Qyester Bay via? upon or near the site of the village of Oyestor Bay, in the ypar 3 653 ; and the Indian Deed for the first purchase was given b ,y the Malinecock Sa- eliem , as follows : "Anno Domini, 1653. This company afterwards -on the 6th May, 1658, sold the ?ame land to Samuel Andrews for £1QQ. Samuel Mayo abotft tl j isiime remoyod to Boston , in Massachusetts , where he resi .ded till his death in 1663 or 1064.
