PONDERING A BID IS Don Leber of Cummaquid.
OPEN MINDED is Mark Begley, owner of Beach Point Oyster Farm who
worked alongside Barnstable Sea Farms and Great Marsh Sea Farms,
of Barnstable, shucking the fruits of their labors.
ORIGINAL PATRONof the Nepalese community on the Cape is Marietta
Bombardieri, owner of Abbicci Restaurant , who says she first brought
Nepalese to work on Cape Cod nine years ago. Behind her is Ron
Schloerb, Cape Cod Times photographer.

, just over the town line, sponsored the
.first group from Nepal to work at Ab-
.bicci.
s. "After the second year of learning
¦the process I went to other business-
>es, like Peterson's Market , to ask if
they would like me to get them help
also," she said. Bombardieri said the
Nepalese community here has grown

about
300 to 400 since

of honor at the
benefit.
It was clear from comments of at-
tendees that they were moved and
outraged by details of the accident
in which the driver stopped , saw the
non-English speaking victim on the
^ ground , then left him by the side
¦
L of the road with a compound
^k fracture
of his right leg and a
'^L crushed ankle.
'^L "Anybody who leaves

the road like that...
^^^
there 's no excuse.
_ _. ^^, You've left
Bk. someone who
basically could
have died , It was disgraceful," said
former town councilor Pete Jasin.
Eva O'Connor of Brewster who
attended with Allan Souza said she
came to the event because she was
haunted by the recurring thought as
she drove along the accident road on
her way to work daily at Hospice and
Palliative Care on Communications
Way. "I was horrified by it," she said.
Capt. Avery Revere, whose brother,
Paul and his wife found the injured
«
Chhodah Lama on the road , donated
a four-hour fishing trip to the event.
"I was very angry at the time that
anybody in town would hit and run,"
she said. "Frankly, it felt racist to
me." (The suspect driver, it was later
learned , does not live in Barnstable
and is facing court charges.)
Don Leber of Cummaquid said, as
he peered over a bid item, "We all
thought it was punk."
Items for the auction came from
all over the Cape and Nantucket ,
from purveyors servicing Matta-
keese Wharf and others such as Preu
Photography of Brewster, Harden
Studios, Mid-Cape Racquetball club,
Great Marsh Kayak Tours, Peter-
son's Market , Salty Fly (a fly fishing
and light tackle charter) , and others.
Other funds reportedly have been
collected through various means to
help the men, who are out of work
and have few assets.
While it is expected medical bills
will be paid by auto insurers, the
extra funds will help the men, who
live in Cummaquid, get through the
winter months. Chhodah Lama said
he would like to bring his wife to the
U.S. to help with his recuperation.
The event was an exemplary way
of displaying the village's heart.
