This is a discussion replicated at Community Preservation Committees and Town Councils state and Cape wide. Recently leaders in Dennis wrestled with this question in deciding whether to use CPA funds to restore and preserve the Dennis Union Church. Ultimately Den- nis citizens decided that the issue was one of historic preservation and community character and not state sponsorship of religion. That is the side of the question I come down on. The Town of Barnstable is beginning to have this discussion. There are a number of historic structures in Town that happen also to be churches. One such structure is the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, vtfiich has stood on Cobb's Hill overlooking Barnstable lkarbor since 1717. It is a direct descendant of the first ipeetinghduse constructed in Barnstable in 1646. It Scaresbilling as the eastside gateway to Barnstable pillage with the Old Barnstable Village School House and the 1856 Customs House also known as the Trayser Museum, a Town-owned building in need of lis own CPA funds. It is the primary visual focus for those entering and leaving the Village and its image ijg replicated in tourism literature as representative of historic structures along Old King's Highway. This ijfstoric structure was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1987 and was designed by Guy Lowell, the famous architect who also designed the Boston Museum of Fine Arts building. A fire destroyed tfhe original sanctuary in 1905. The structure will be celebrated at a 100th anniversary fete in July 2007 and the 300th anniversary of the historic continuum will be observedin 2017. I For those of us who live in this Village, there is no (jbubt about the cultural, community and historic importance of this building. The grounds are opened up to parking for the Town-owned Hollow, a public toddlers playground and a ball field. Overflow parking from the Town-owned Trayser Museum is also located on the Church property. The sanctuary is used for CONTINUED ON PAGE B:2 PRECINCT 1 ANN CANEDY Scores raise $14,000 for injured seasonal workers By Paul Gauvin pgauvin@barnstablepalriot.com GUESTS Chiwang Rinchen Lama, left, and Chhodah Lama, both of whom were injured in separate Cape accidents, arrived with smiles and crutches for a benefit for them at Mattakeese Wharf Restaurant last week. BREWSTER RESIDENTS Allan Souza and Eva O'Connor (she works in Barnstable) made the trip to the auction to help the accident victims. It began as a hit and run accident and ended up as an apologetic cause celebre that debunked the North Side's perceived Yankee aloof- ness by unveiling its compassion. About 180 people -not all from the village -shelled out $50 a head to taste food, spend more money on a silent auction of 43 donated items and enjoy village camaraderie at the Mattakeese Wharf Restaurant last week to show two Nepalese accident victims the Cape cares. Chhodah Lama, hurt in the alleged hit and run accident on Aug. 3, and Chewang Rinchen Lama, injured when hit by a truck on Aug. 15, arrived on crutches and sat at a corner table with a good view of the bar and tables where the auction items were dis- played. Neither speaks English. When the tally was over, Laurie Vendetti, who with her husband, Paul, initiated the benefit with TimFriary, villagers and others had combined to raise $14,000 for the uninsured sea- sonal workers at the Cape Cod Organic Farm in Barnstable Village. Chhodah also worked a second job as kitchen help at Mattakeese Wharf Restaurant. Vendetti (her husband and she are general managers of Mattakeese Wharf Restaurant) said they put out a col- lection jar the next day and discussed the possibility of a benefit event with Friary, owner of the farm where the injured men work. "We felt we had to do something, but we just couldn't do it right away because we were in full season," Vendetti said. Time was also needed to solicit auc- tion items and get other restaurants to participate. And it turned out well, with the standing-room crowd enjoying sam- plings of food and fresh shellfish. "Try this," said Cynthia Cole of Barnstable, holding a small plate with a cabbage- covered delicacy. "It's delicious!" -not to mention the sweet oysters from Barnstable Village's own sea farms. Participating restaurants were the Red Pheasant, Abbicci, Old Yarmouth Inn, the 902 Main Restaurant, Naked Oyster, Wicked Oyster of Wellfleet, L'Alouette, Inaho, three sea farms (Barnstable , Beach Point Oysters and Great Marsh Sea Farms), Cre- ative Baking, Kayak Cookies, Pain D'Avignon, Brewster Fish House and Mattakeese Wharf. The recuperating men are part of a growing Nepalese community on the Cape started some nine years ago when Marietta Bombardieri, owner of Abbicci Restaurant in Yarmouthport CONTINUED ON PAGE B:3 Villagers, friends exhibit concern for their neighbors from Nepal ^7 "l TO&K* Lfmternet services Save over J1,000/year with our Small Business Plan! fljfiPPIPPM A No Contracts • No Hidden Fees • No Taxes flk^yOHjjj^^^K One Call, One Bill Convenience 1 9| | § | ^ ^ ^ ^ H All this is included FREE: ^ ^ ^ ^ B l r a s l l ^ ^ ^ B SpamNabber Call Waiting B H M M H t i H |K £^ ^5 l Vl,us Filters Call Forwarding B M p l'^Pi U y f ' C f f i E ^B Remote Dialup Access Call Blocking I H Webmail B I i^E | a ^S 1^ ^ ^2^S Backup Email 3 W,iy Calling B M R M H I^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ B Caller ID Distinctive Ringing ^ ^ ^ ^ Hp ^VQ^ ^ ^ ^ H Plus, freecallsto other CapeComBroadbandVoice Usersl v M « I ¦ $99 ¦508-539-9500 jcapecom ¦ p^ iinternet services www.cape.com S 509 FalmouthRoad, Mashpee, MA02649 r f t J p-* \ /I | I A ( f^ CI k SEND US TOOn WlllftBl MlnS: Engagements, weddings, anniversaries , honors, I Phone 508-771-1427 1 j j | .
