Cape Cod Athletic Club celebrates pearl anniversary t ; By Kathleen I kszmit@barnstablepalriot.com RUNNING AWAY WITH THE WIN - The Raiders make their way toward the finish line during Tuesday's tri-meet against Durfee and Taunton. Barnstable defeated both teams 17-46 and 25-30 respectively. In the New England running world, there is perhaps no name more familiar than Johnny Kelley. In the Cape Cod running world, perhaps the most popular organization for runners is the Cape Cod Athletic Club, started in 1976 by Kelley, who was a resident of Dennis, and Nauset Middle School teacher Larry Hansen. Tomorrow evening the Cape Cod Athletic Club (CCAC) celebrates its 30th anniversary with a reception at the Hyannis Golf Club. "It originally started just to promote running on Cape Cod," said club member Brian Kelly, noting that part of the motivation involved members being able to run in a race from Plymouth Rock to Provincetown. "You had to belong to a certified club to participate. That was the impetus. " Today the club includes not just runners, but cyclists, swimmers and tri-athletes. It sponsors or manages charitable Cape races including the famed Johnny Kelley Road Race in Hyannis. "There isn't a race that the club doesn't put on that isn't charitable," said Kelly. While the organization focuses on running- centered events, it was felt that the 30th was worthy of celebration for all involved with the club. Invites for the fete were sent to the more than 250 members, as well as those who were members in years past. "It's quite a mix of the Cape," said Kelly. "We've got business people, doctors, electricians, plumbers. It's a very i integrated club." It's also a very popular club. "It provides camaraderie," said Kelly, who added that members even have subgroups in several Cape locales, including Hyannis. Because running is an all-season sport some of the most well liked CCAC events occur in the winter. "During the winter, we have a winter series [of races]," said Kelly. "That's probably the highlight for everybody." Aside from the fellowship of the club, Kelly also appreciates its steadfastness. "People come and go, but the club is actually stronger , today than ten years ago," he said. "I am look- ing forward to the 50th ." The Cape Cod Athletic Club anniversary reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Hyannis Golf Club. All former and current members are welcome to attend. Running into the future Raiders fall to New Bedford in dramatic homecoming match By Kathleen Szmit kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com WOUNDED WARRIOR -After sustaining an injury, Zach Wilsonistendedtobytrainer KeithChagaris. While Wilson was sidelinedfor several series, he rejoined the game in the final minutes. TAKING A KNEE - Jake Fulham (75) and Todd Lomax (46) take a knee while waiting for a play during Friday night's homecoming game against New Bedford. After Barnstable scored their first touchdown against New Bedford on Friday night, the fans slowly making their way into the bleachers started paying attention. When BHS brought the score to 13-0, they were riveted. Unfortunately, with key players Drew Sifflard and Alex Glenn sidelined within- juries, the Raiders couldn't hold up against the formidable Whalers, who harpooned a 21-19 victory in overtime. In spite of the defeat, Barnstable turned in a most impressive effort on the gridiron, not once backing down from the fight. While the first quarter saw plenty of back and forth action, the game remained scoreless. Offensively, the Raiders' Jordan Looby and Donny Campbell were in top form. Looby turned in a neat seven-yard fake punt run while Campbell had two nice receptions. The game's second quarter was all about Barnstable. With 6:12 left on the clock the Raiders took a 7-0 lead when Dean Tillman landed a one-yard plunge for the touch- down, followed by a smooth extra-point kick by Pavalus Mitchell. The Raiders scored again on their next possession on a stellar 26-yard diving touchdown reception to Campbellfrom Ryan Tremblett. An 11-yard reception by Zach Wilson and a 15-yard run by Dean Tillman brought in the score. Prior to the end of the first half, Wilson was sidelined with an injury after com- pleting a 33-yard run on the Raiders' first possession of the half. When Wilson was unable to return to the game for several series, the wind seemed to come right out of the Raiders' sails. Seizing their chance, the Whalers made their way to the BHS 18 but were thwarted when Pat Fulhamtipped a pass on the fourth down. The Raiders again stopped New Bedford in the fourth with a half-yard at the BHS 25 with 6:47 left on the clock, only to have the Whalers recover a fumble moments later. The face of the game changed drasti- cally when New Bedford brought the score to 13-7 on a 25-yard reception with 6:41 remaining. Then, with a mere 25 seconds left, the Whalers shot past the Raiders to score again, bringing the score to an even 13-13. When the extra point kick veered left, the game was sent into an electric overtime. After opting to defend rather than receive, Barnstable tried but was unable to prevent New Bedford from crossing the key line, bringing the score to 19-13. Sec- onds later, the Whalers' two-point conver- sion notched it to 21-13. The Raiders gave it their all when their turn came, with Tillman running in a 10-yard touchdown much to the glee of anxious fans, but with the score teeter- ing at 21-19, the Whalers defense put the kibosh on BHS's conversion rush, ending the game and claiming victory. Next up for Barnstable is a trip to Dart- mouth tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. game. # A valiant effort Teams find success in tri-meet By Kathleen Szmit kszmit@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT PHOTOS AND THEY'RE OFF! - The boys cross country teams from Barnstable, Durfee and Taunton head out on their run at Hathaway's Pond on Tuesday. BHS defeated Durfee but fell to Taunton. Watching Jill Lyon run is a bit like watching Tiger Woods play golf. Even though you expect her to cross the finish line first, it'sstillmightyimpressive when she does. Lyon was in first place once again on Tuesday when the Barnstable girls cross-country team competed in a dual meet against Taunton and Durfee at Hathaway 's Pond, defeating both by 25-30 and 17-46 respec- tively. From the start, Lyon looked calm and self-assured in spite of a sudden drop in the late afternoon temperature. Maintainingher cool composure throughout the 2.9-mile run, Lyon turned in a neat run of 19:06. Teammate Chelsea LeRoux also had a stellar afternoon as she crossed the finish linein sec- ond place at 20:29,with Hannah Cavanaugh close behind her in third at 20:32 helping to clinch the wins for Barnstable. While Taunton and Durfee filled in the middle, Barnstable rounded out the top ten with KellyErhard (23:25) and Stepha- nie Scarpato (23:30). When the final runners emerged from the course, the team gathered to show support for the boys team, also compet- CONTINUED ON PAGE A:15 Raiders running to victories
