ast week, there was a ribbon cutting for the newly
established Bank of Cape Cod. Straight-ahead, you
might think -investors got together and, out of
both business sense and passion, started a new bank. But
there is more here just beneath the surface.
After the ceremony at the door with the giant faux scis-
sors and the real Fiskars, folks wandered into the lobby »
for some coffee and munchies. I bumped into (not liter-
ally) Bob Pemberton. You remember him - the man who
created Software 2000 (then to become Infinium when
they realized they were actually going to make it into the
new millennium.) Well, he is the chairman of the board
of directors of that bank. In conversation, he said to me,
"Ten years ago, I never would have recommended that
this bank locate here (Main Street, Hyannis, that is) . Now
it makes so much sense."r
In the last year alone, we have seen 21 new businesses
move on to Main Street. Six of those took up spaces that
had sat dormant for a few too many years. But the prop-
erty owners and obviously the tenants had the confidence
to build, rehab and customize using substantial dollars
for some substantial businesses. Besides the new bank,
we have welcomed in Morgan Stanley. Colorful Creations
came from a mall, Salon Concepts from off-Cape, and two
new shops, Bee and Blossom and Shaunna, would rival
any Newbury Street boutique.
There are sue new mixed-use developments either under
construction or in the pipeline: a 29-townhouse project
and commercial building at the corner of Stevens and
Main (with the exception of Harry's, this area has been
blighted for decades); a 22-unit condo and retail space
project at the corner of Ocean and Main; another mixed-
use on Center Street (old Storyland site); two mixed-use
projects on South Street at the end of Main Street (Sher-
man's Square); and a condo project on Stevens Street.
Now let's look at this bullish picture and take into ac-
count that when TD Banknorth acquired Cape Cod Bank &
Trust, the parent corporation was happy to stay right where
its new company had always been and continues to make
substantial investments in our downtown. When Rockland
Tnist spread its wings to Cape Cod, it moved its regional
headquarters to Main Street. Looks to me like the financial
industry is as bullish on Main Street Hyannis as I am!
There is lots of talk these days in the local and regional
daily papers about less traffic and fewer tourists. (Con-
trary to this talk, we saw a very, very busy street this
summer.) But that does not mean that we or anyone else
in business has to suffer. After all, 250,000 people live on
this peninsula. We are reinventing ourselves every day
to accommodate our year-round population who need a
place to live, work, shop or visit -year-round. Every day
we are working towards accommodating our own as well
as visitors with our great restaurants, shops, and services
-including those financial services that are cutting rib-
bons on Main Street.

Improvement District.

FLOOR PLAN-Joseph Carroll,director of Cape CodRehabilitation,points
to the layout and amenities of expanded facility under construction in
the former Barnstable Fitness Club on Attucks Lane.
More business condomini-
ums are in the works on At-
tucks Lane in Hyannis.
The former Barnstable Ath-
letic Club building, which
was the last venue offering
racquetball in the town, is
undergoing major renovation
that is expected to be com-
pleted around January, said
Joseph E Carroll, director of
Cape Cod Rehabilitation/Fit-
Plan (CCR).
Carroll has purchased a
7,500-square-foot unit on the
first floor of the two-story
building. His unit will house a
FitPlan health club, therapy
and locker rooms , and an
800-square-foot "therapy and
exercise pool" heated to 90
degrees. The FitPlan Athletic
Club is and will remain open
to the general public and
also be used by the special
population, such as people
with arthritis , participating
in therapy programs.
FitPlan is a division of Cape
Cod Rehabilitation. It offers
membersindividualized train-
ingin sports conditioning pro-
grams that help reduce injury
risk and maximize athletic
performance.
Carroll said he assumed
management of the former
athletic club on July 24 and
that the FitPlan staff of "highly
trained athletic trainers"and
certified strength and condi-
tioning staff is running it.
He said the fitness club
remains open along with
therapy programs during
construction. Racquetball
courts,however, have already
been dismantled and some
older exercise equipment
removed.
Carroll and his wife, Kathy,
also own and operate ortho-
pedic and sports physical
therapy centers at 1336 Main
St., Osterville, and 102C Sum-
merfield ParkinMashpee. The
Attucks Lane venue will be
the largest center operated
by the Carrolls.
Joseph Carrollisno stranger
to the building. "We have been
renting 1,000 square feet here
for six years," he said, "but
we,re looking forward to hav-
ing our owntherapy pool to be
used by patients from all the
centers and FitPlan members.
We've alwayshad pool therapy
but we had to rent time at
local hotels, Sandwich High
School and the YMCA (and)
couldn't always get timewhen
we needed it."
Standingalongsidethe floor
plan for the new facility, Car-
roll said the pool will be "L"
shaped,with shallowand deep
ends, integrated Jacuzzi and
a power lift to lower wheel-
chair clients into the pool for
exercise. He emphasized that
it isn't a "lap pool."
Cape Cod Rehabilitation
has been providing physical
therapy and sports medicine
services on the Cape since
1988 for most major insur-
ers, including Medicare, and
private-party payers.Carroll,

calspecialist,saidhe employs
30 people between the three
sites,the largest of whichwas
in Mashpee at 6,000 square
feet, no ppol but with a gym
open to the public.
"I've alreadybought allnew
equipment for the fitness cen-
ter,"Carroll said while noting
that members of the former
Barnstable Athletic Club
continue to exercise there in
temporary quarters. "Keep-
ing the place operating dur-
ing construction has been a
challenge," Carroll admitted,
"but our patients and the
members of the fitness club
have been veryunderstanding
and supportive, and so has
our staff."
The plan also calls for reg-
