Jo lie Conliniitd Archbishop Cushing we nave miervieweu a good many people who have turned their spare time hobby into a business— and here is another. Many of you know , or have heard ot Cape Cod's "Java Man. " He is the sprltely old fellow who prepares and delivers coffee and sandwiches to Hyannis business people, to the Courthouse, and to the Barnstable beacheB In the summertime. Although known to hundreds of customers and friends as tho "Java Man," he is in reality Benjamin E. Chapman. "Ben," who claims sev- eral hobbies, a number or years ago became interested In preserv- ing Christmas trees as a hobby. Through research and experimenta- tion he developed a solution with which he sprays evergreens us a preservative. The naturalist Instinct in Bon had fostered a "hobby busi- ness!" Through some method of his own he can also "make dead grass come to life," 1 am speaking now of the marsh grass variety. He colors and dyes these grasses, which lend themselves beautifull y to "chic" decorating arrangements for homes and store window dis- plays, in addition to coloring grass- es and reviving them , Ben also works wonders with pine cones, sea lavender, milkweed pods, black alder berries, fir and balsam boughs. What started out as a one man's outlet for his artistic leaningB, has grown into a tidy little wholesale and retail business. Ben is 74 years young—und 1 do mean young. He has the enthusiasm and confidence of youth , and could easily pass as a good 20 years younger than he actually is. Per- haps his secret lies In his busy i lite . . . perhaps Ben has been so active all of his life that he hasn't had time to grow old! He was born in New Bedford and has resided at various times in Middleboro, Fall River and Providenco before lie came to Hyannis. During the war he served free hot coffee and doughnuts to count- less service men, a program which later became popular with civic organizations throughout the coun- try. He received letters from grate- ful army and navy men in ail partB ot the world , who remembered tho hobby of the Java Man. His mobile lunch room is well known to hun- dreds of Cape Codders. Ben has another hobby, at which ho has become most accomplished. Singing to the accompaniment of his steel guitar and playing the musical bones. In all sincerity, we have heard of few more accom- plished persons who have mastered this art—an unusual Instrument to be sure. He can cllckety-clack with , the best of them most rhythmically. A few weeks ago lie participated in , our radio program , "Talk About i Hobbles—!" and later appearod on Ted Mack's television hour In New ;York. Previously ho appeared in a number of local minstrel shows and entertainments. I All in all , we would say Hen IB ' a pretty happy man; ho has u busi- ness which Is more pleasure than work and several enjoyable hob- Wegj which add to his earnings.— , i Curl W, Holmes.
