LPGA Hall of Famer credits

Watching golfer Pat Bradley make her way
around the course at Osterville'sOyster Harbors
Club on Monday during the Thyroid Foundation
of America (TFA) Classic, fans would never guess
there was atimewhen shefeared she wasthrough
with golf.
In 1986, Bradley was
literallyatthetop ofher
game. She was named
Player of the Year, win-
ning five LPGA titles
including three m^jor
championships, one of
which was the Nabisco
Dinah Shore LPGA.
Less than a year lat-
er, Bradley was strug-
gling on the course,
overwhelmed by an
onslaught of physical
symptoms that seemed
to come on with no rhyme or reason. "All of a
sudden I was zapped with no muscle strength,"
recalled Bradley. "I went from driving more than
240 yards off the tee to barely making 210."
Believingherproblemsto bethe result of stress
that was affecting her swing,Bradley sought help
from her swingcoach. "Isaid,'What iswrongwith
my swing? Fixit!'" said Bradley.
Then she began experiencing tremors. "My
hands shook so bad I could barely get the ball on
the tee," Bradley said, noting that she thought
the problems were allin her head."Ithought that
I created these symptoms myself."
Knowing the psychology involved in the game
of golf, Bradley was hesitant to seek help. "You

"Here I was, I was trembling so bad and having
heart palpitations. Ithought people could seemy
shirt move with them."

of Graves' Disease,'" recounted Bradley.
Graves'Disease is an illnessthat causeshyper-
thyroidism, the source for Bradley's mysterious
symptoms.Thanks to her diagnosisand prescrip-
tion medication, Bradley was able to regulate
her overactive thyroid and regain her health. In
1989, she returned to that California tournament
and won it.

IN THE RED - With the score tied just before the
hall, the JV cheerleaders did their best to keep
the Raiders' spirits high. Barnstable ended up
defeating Somerset 34-22.

B
eing the middle child can be a
tough position for a kid, unless
that kid is in the BHS football
program. In recent weeks, the proverbial
middle child of BHS football -freshmen
being the youngest and varsity the eldest
-has demonstrated that it is a force to be
reckoned with.
On Sept. 23, the day after the BHS
varsity boys fell to the D-Y Dolphins, the
junior varsity team stepped up to the
line, defeating the Dolphins' JV team
21-7. This week the JV Raiders trounced
Somerset with an impressive final score of
34-22.
Facing D-Ythe day after the varsity
team's loss, the JV team was itching to
exact a bit of sporting revenge. They
found it in two touchdowns from Johnny
Gomes, with a third coming on an Alex
Breski return of 85 yards on a kickoff,
quickly submerging the spirits of the
Dolphins.
Defensively Mike Brown, Jon Wenger
and Breski were solid, allowing D-Yto
break through to score only one time.
On Monday the team took the field
against Somerset in a high-scoring, well-
played match.
A first-quarter touchdown by Somerset ,
garnered when the Raiders momentarily
dropped their guard, motivated the BHS
team to focus and regroup. They did
so hastily, bringingin two touchdowns
before the end of the first half, including a
stunner by Breski.
On the last play before the half Breski
again turned in another great run, 80
yards this time, crossing the line for a
stellar touchdown that brought the score
to 15-8.
The defensive line was a strong factor in
Barnstable's success in the first half with
Mike Barnocky snagging three intercep-
tions, two in the end zone.
BHS continued to roll over Somerset
in the second half as the offensive line
gelled, coming together to secure the win.
Barnstable's final TD came when Casey
Hanf scooped up an onsides kick and
then, in a brilliant show of athleticism,
threw a lateral pass to Brown while being
forced out of bounds. Continuing the play,
Brown ran the pass in for an exciting TD.
"This was a great team effort in which
everyone contributed," said head coach
Paul Bentley.
The JV team next faces New Bedford on
Saturday at New Bedford.
