They both wear glasses

Last Friday's Business sec-

In a piece on thrift, AARP

it had been addressed to

Saturday to say she hadn't
received it, so we forwarded
the appropriate e-mail....

Larsons are backing
a Democrat
Allen Larson is still getting
used to not being aregistered
Republican.
The head of the Cape Cod
Center for Sustainability and
his wife Gloria, chairman of
the Massachusetts Conven-
tion Authority,both changed
their voting status to unen-
rolled to support a different
Democrat in last month's
primary - and now they're
backing the man who beat
their favorites.
"My wife was a Tom Reilly
supporter,"Larson said. "She
had been very supportive of
Reillyinthe attorney general's
race in the last election."
Larson said he wasdrawn to
businessmanChrisGabrieli,who
wasReilly'slikelyrunningmate
before theAG dumped him.He
said he admired Gabrieli for
founding Mass Inc., the bipar-
tisanpublic policy group.
Deval Patrick bested both
Larsons' candidates,and now
has their backing.
"It'sin no way a criticism of
anybody," Larson said. "He's
better qualified and has a
breadth of experience that
resonated with us."
Larson, who came to Mas-
sachusetts from New York
State to work in one of Elliott
Richardson's campaigns and
later ran unsuccessfully for
county commissioner, doesn't
know whether he'll remain
unenrolled after Nov. 7.
"I've spent 20 years working
to build a two-party system,"
he said. "It's not clear to me
what the (Republican) party
is going to consist of after the
election.Both partiesareseek-
ing definition, in my view.

Barnstable FD postpones vote on retiree benefits
Item will come
up for May 2007
annual meeting
By David Still II

DAVID STILL II PHOfO- "
QUICK MEETING - Barnstable Fire District Moderator Richard Clark
moves quickly through Monday night's two-article special meeting.
Action on a change in retirement benefits was put off until the May "
2007 annual meeting.
It took longer for the
Barnstable Fire District to
find a quorum than it did to
act on the two-article special
meeting warrant Monday.
The meeting started a few
minutes past the scheduled
7:30 p.m. start because it
lacked the minimum25-voter
quorum. After a couple cell
phone calls and a trip to the
nearby Dolphin restaurant to
rustle up qualified citizens,
the meeting got under way.
Those interrupted werejust
briefly detained by the busi-
ness of the fire district.
Akeyto the meeting'sbrev-
ity was the postponement of
action on an article to change
how the district handles re-
tirement benefits.
Prudentialcommitteemem-
ber Peter Eleftherakis called
for the postponement until
the district's May annual
meeting.He saidthat it didn't
make sense to push the item
through without a greater ex-
planation to the community.
Eleftherakis said that there
was misunderstanding in the
community about what the
article would do.
The provision of state law
that the district sought to
adopt would have required
eligibleretirees (65 and older)
to move over to a comparable
Medicare plan.
District ClerkMaryMclsaac
said before the meeting that
the district pays 80percent of
the plansselected bythe retir-
ees.The cost to the district is
in excess of $1,600 per month
per retiree for those selecting
top-tier plans, which is most
of them.
Mclsaacsaidthatthesaving
to the district per employee
under current rates would
be roughly $1,200 per month.
Under the new plan, the dis-
trict would continue to pay 80
percent of the cost.
The district has 10retirees.
two of whomwould have been
affected by the article at this
time.
Voters unanimously OK'd
an extra $30,000 for a previ-
ously approved well upgrade
project.
A majority of voters at the
meeting was associated with -
the fire district in some fashi j
ion, as employees, retirees or^;
elected officials. :-
There were no questions
asked duringthe five minutes ,
or so it took to deal with both
articles. -

Council review committee rinding suppor
Nine-member
committee would
look at number,
mode of election
By David Still II
dstill@barnstablepatriot.com
A proposed review of town
councilmembershipandmode
of election is finding support
among some councilors.
The council was to get its
first look at theitemproposed
by Osterville Councilor Jim
Crocker this week. The item
callsfor the council president
to appoint a nine-member
committee to examine the
"total number of members
and electoral process" of the
council, but would extend to
"any other provision of the
charter relating to the town
council."
Crocker saidthat he hoped
the committeewouldbemade
up of community members,
not councilors.At aminimum,
he would like to see a major-
ity from the community at
large.
He said the idea is to get
out in front ofthe 2010federal
census,which establishesthe
population for redistricting.
Precincts must be drawnto
represent no more than 4,000
people. The 47,821 residents
recorded in the 2000 census
required just 12 precincts,
but a bit of a buffer was built
into the town's current 13
precincts.The latest estimate
(2003) shows a population of
48,907.
Council Vice President Ja-
net Joakim sees benefit in
such areviewandthe possibly
of at-large members. With a
large council it "can be very
difficult to get things done,"
she said.
Joakim and Crocker at-
tended a workshop at this
year'sMassachusetts Munici-
palAssociationConference on
localgovernanceand chartefiE
which addressed the typSjjSS
of changes a council su^S
as Barnstable 's can seek. SjS
change in representation fra
at-large councilors is amoajK
them, she said. «g*
Joakim has also borne tfij
brunt of redistricting. In t$j£i
span of four years, she sto$j£
