OBITUARIES Vaughn S. Avedian, 65 West Barnstable -VaughnS.Ave- dian,65,died Sept. 19,2006, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the husband of Sheila (Johnson) Avedian for 47 years. Mr. Avedian was born in Worces- ter, graduated from St.John'sHigh Schooland earnedmaster'sdegrees from Worcester State College and Syracuse University. He also at- tended Harvard University. He worked in education and retired as a teacher from the Fairhaven school system. An avid golfer, he was a member of OldBarnstable FairgroundsGolf Course and a USGA golf rater. He had three holes-in-one, including two in one round. He also loved gardening and working around the house.Hemostloved spendingtime with his family. Besides his wife, survivors in- clude two children, V. Stephen of Union, N.J., and John D. of North Yarmouth, Maine; and seven sib- lings, Richard of Spencer, David of Milford, Frances Howard and Wil- liam, both of Worcester, Stephanie Rice of Auburn,Andrea Sullivan of Framingham and Helene Lynch of Shrewsbury. John William Brennan, 81 Centerville -John William"Jack" Brennan, 81, died Sept. 19, 2006, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. Hewasthe husband of Betty Jane Brennan for 59 years. Born in Centerville, Mr. Brennan attended Barnstable schoolsbefore joining the Navy in 1943. During WWII, he served in the European and Pacific theaters on the USS Texasand the USSBadoeng Strait. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He received, among others, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal 2 stars, Eu- ropean-African-Middle Eastern Medal 2 stars andthe WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Brennan returned to Centerville and worked as apainter for 10years.He then worked for HP Hood and Cape Dairyfor 40yearsas a wholesale ice cream driver. Mr. Brennan was known as a friend to all animals, domestic and wild.He enj oyed raisinghorses and livestock. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jane Benger of Bellingham and Bonnie Wenger of Centerville;five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Caswell, 73 Hyannis - Beverley A. Caswell, 73, died Sept. 21, 2006, at Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth. Born on Nantucket ,Mrs. Caswell graduated from Nantucket High School and moved to Centerville in 1970. She worked as a telephone op- erator for New England Telephone Company and NYNEX on Nan- tucket and Cape Cod until retire- ment in 1981. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends , and also cooking, gardening, bird watching and reading. Mrs. Caswell is survived by a daughter, Karen Matland of Mashpee and ason,Eric Matland of Agawam;abrother, SidneySmallof Nantucket; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills.Burial was in Pros- pect Hill Cemetery on Nantucket. Childs Jr., 86 Hyannis - Alden Belmont Childs Jr. died at his home Sept. 21, 2006. He was the husband of Rita (Robert) Childswithwhom he had just celebrated his 59th wedding anniversary. Born in West Barnstable, Mr. Childs spent his entire life on Cape Cod.He graduated fromBarnstable High School in 1939 while working at Puritan Clothing on Main Street in Hyannis. Mr.Childsvolunteered to serve in the Air Force in 1942. A sergeant, he was an aerial engineer and top turret gunner in an 8th Air Force B-17 Flying-Fortress in the 385th Bombardment Group. He flew more than 20 missions in Great Britain and was in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he married and began workingat the HyannisPost Office,wherehewasaletter carrier for more than 20years.He received an honorary certificate for saving thelife of anelderlyHyanniswoman who had been bedridden and mal- nourished for nearly a month. Mr. Childs worked for 13 years with the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyardand Nantucket Steamship Authority before retiring. He was an avid shellfisherman and sports enthusiast. One of his greatest experiences waswatching his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, win the 2004 World Series. A skilled candlepin bowler, he was the first person ever to bowl a triple strike on regional television in the 1960s. A member of the VFW and Elks Lodge, he enjoyed marching in parades with comrades and mak- ing public appearances in support of servicemen. Mr.Childsloved to draw and built up anextensivecollectionof stamps asalifelongcollector.He had agreat sense of humor, and a deep love for his family and Cape Cod. Besideshiswife,survivorsinclude two daughters, Sharon Fitzpatrick of Sagamore Beach and Cynthia Kolnos of Hyannisport; two sons, Robert Childs of Ocala, Fla., and Alden B. Childs III of Hyannis; eight grandchildren , two great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and countless cousins and friends. Feeley, 78, died Sept. 14, 2006, at her home. Born in Boston, she attended local schools, graduating from Thayer Academy in Braintree. She also graduated from Garland Junior College and attended Tufts University. Miss Feeley taught at many schools , including the Wheeler School in Providence , R.I. She also tutored many students in her spare time. She managed The Wool Shop and Appleseeds Apparel, both in Osterville. She also worked at the SalvationArmyinHyannis and was a VISTAvolunteer. She lived on Cape Cod during her retirement. She enjoyed golf, knitting and spending time with family. She was a Red Sox and Patriots fan, and was a big supporter of the Republican Party. Survivorsinclude abrother,John Feeley of Scituate; a sister, Ann F Kieffer of Wilmot, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. Edward J. Gildea, 82 Barnstable - Edward J. Gildea, 82,ofBarnstable,passed awaySept. 17, 2006, after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Janet Hyde Gildea,who died in 2003. Theywere married for 58 years. Mr.Gildeaattended St.Gregory's school in Dorchester, and later Belmont High School. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. He spent time training on B-24s at bases across the U.S. He eloped with and married his highschool sweetheart,Janet Hyde of Belmont, and honeymooned on a three-day pass. After the war, he attended Bos- ton University on the G.I. Bill of Rights, majoring in business. He began his career as a salesman for Rotis Plywood. In 1954, he founded AlliedPlywoodwithMort Waldfogel, who would be his partner for over 50years. Together they built Allied International, the largest import/ export company in New England with 10 offices, nationwide. They distributed plywood and building materials imported from Russia and had amajor positive impact on President Nixon'sdetente policy of trading with Russia. In 1983, they sold Allied and Mr. Gildea spent the last 23 years of his life as a philanthropist and traveling with his wife. He was a major donor to manycharities,such as the YMCA of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Hospital, Simmons College, CapeAbilities, and many others. When Capeabilities needed a van to transport handicapped people, he not only donated the money, he donated his time. He researched the options and found that the van manufacturer had to make the van handicap accessible at no charge. As a history buff, he relished his chance to see places in the world he had read about as a child growing up in Dorchester. He and his wife traveled to South Africa, Ireland, France, England, and the Far East, as well as on many cruise excursions. He co-founded the Pilgrim Con- gregational Church in Lexington and was a long-time member of the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville. Mr. Gildea is survived by a son, James H. Gildea (of Weston, and a daughter, Ann H. Gildea O'Keefe of Sudbury; four grandchildren, a sister, Josephine Jones of South Yarmouth; and a nephew. A funeral service was held at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Lexington, followed by burial at Westview Cemetery there. Pauline Hopkins, 97 Roxbury, N.Y. - Pauline (Lutz) Hopkins, 97, formerly of South Yarmouth, died on July 21, 2006, at Kirkside of Roxbury in Roxbury, N.Y. Shewasthe wife of the late James Scribner Hopkins. Born in Grand Gorge, N.Y, she attended Roxbury High School and Chevy Chase School in Chevy Chase, Md. She received her Bach- elor of Arts from Skidmore College and later did graduate work at the University of Buffalo. Upon graduation in 1930, she re- turned to her home in Roxbury and began her teaching career traveling between one-room schoolhousesto teach Art and English. After her marriage In 1933in New York City, she took time at home before she resumed teaching part- time inthe Roxbury CentralSchool. Later, she returned to full time at Gilboa Central School. The family moved to Cape Cod in 1957,whereMrs.HopkinstaughtArt to all grades in the five towns of the Dennis-YarmouthRegional School District, inspiring and nurturing manystudents. Over the years, she chaired the Art Department, add- ing many more art teachers, while teaching at the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. She was a member of the Mas- sachusetts Advisory Committee for Scholastic Arts, a Demonstrator of Eastern Arts and a panelist in Philadelphia. Shewasajurist for the State of Rhode Island Scholastic Arts, a member of Who's Who in High School Teachers and a mem- ber of Delta Kappa Gamma. She retired in 1974. In acknowl- edgement of the affection and respect felt by her students and colleagues, the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Art Depart- ment named its galleryinher honor, "The Polly Hopkins Gallery," In retirement at Thirwood Place she remained committed to the teaching of art, serving as juror and givinginformal art classes. Her chosen medium was watercolor. With the support other friends at Thirwood Place, she helped initiate a scholarship program for the school age employees and the children of others, which has since expanded, awarding eight $1,000 scholarships to students from local schools on the Cape in 2006. Survivors include a son, John B. Hopkins of Andes, N.Y; two daugh- ters, Anne H. Barrett of Cotuit and Mary Louise Kalin of Tivoli, N.Y; six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. A tribute to Mrs. Hopkins will be held Oct. 14 at the D-Y High School in South Yarmouth from 2 to 4 p.m., m the Polly Hopkins Gallery in the Art Department, for her many former students, faculty and friends. William L. Judkins, Sr., 85 Chelmsford -William L. Judkins, Sr., 85, of Chelmsford, died Sept. 18, 2006. He was the husband of the late Anna M. (Logsdon). A World WarIiveteran,he served with the U.S. Marines at Bougain- ville, British Solomon Island and Marianas Islands, Guam. The retired 3rd Class Machinist lived alos in Marstons Mills and Lexington. He is survived by his children, Judith Ann Judkins of Cherry Valley, CA, William L. Judkins Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA, Nancy L. Dyer of Clinton, Marianne Marley of Concord, N.H., Linda L. Judkins of Clinton, and Ronald J. Judkinjs, Sr.ofWilmington;13grandchildrejt; and sisters Alice Pedro and Peggy Peoples. Hazel Kuliga, 79 Cotuit - Hazel (Dowdeswell) Ku- liga, 79, died Sept. 16, 2006. She was the wife of Joseph F. Kuliga, who died in 2005. Mrs. Kuliga was born and edu- cated in New Bedford and gradu- ated from New Bedford High School in 1944. She then worked at Continental Screw Co. and was a secretary for Standard Accident Insurance Co. As a member of the Greater New Bedford Chapter for Retarded Citizens,she spent manyvolunteer hours on the board of directors and was involved in many com- mittees. After movingto Cotuitin 1967,she continuedher advocacy atNazareth Hall and capeAbilities. She was also a member of Camp Fire Inc., and served as leader, fundraising chairwoman, a board of directors member and president of the Cape Cod Charter. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church inOsterville,and a former communicant of Grace Episcopal Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts and spent many hours doing handwork and ceramics. Survivors include four daugh- ters , Linda and Kathy Kuliga , both of Cotuit, Joanne Guarino of Marstons Mills and Donna Lynds of North Falmouth;and four grand- children. A funeral was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
