C
ape Cod'snewest foot-
ball program officially
began its season on
Sunday in spit e of a slick play-
ing field and misty weather.
Of course, in football, such
conditions are almost wel-
come. Such was the case when
players in the Cape Flag Foot-
ball League took to the field at
the Barnstable Horace Mann
Charter School in Marstons
Mills for their season-opening
games.
First on the schedule were
the Patriots versus the Bears.
The Pats were hot right out
of the box, taking the Bears
12-8. They dominated the field
with stellar passing and strong
communication between play-
ers.
Running back Mic Flick of
Sandwich proved that al-
though he is new to the sport,
he is destined to become a
formidable opponent .Early in
the match, Flick made a one-
handed sliding catch out of
the backfield before regaining
his footing and running in a
62-yard touchdown.
Teammate Paul Carroll of
Brighton was also a great as-
set to the Patriots, turning in
three interceptions in the
game.
Next up were the Redskins
against the Cowboys, with
the Redskins emerging tri-
umphant with a final score of
13-6.
West Yarmouth's Jonathan
Shaw, playing quarterback for
the Redskins, passed for 14
attempts with 28 completions
and a total of 153yards for the
match while teammate Jason
Bordun of Centerville had a
15-yard touchdown catch and
one interception.
Former BHS gridiron guru
and current assistant coach
of the freshman team, Andre
Barbosa of Hyannis, was the
star quarterback of the final
match of the day between
the Falcons and the Steelers.
Barbosa had 155yards passing
with two passing touchdowns
and one rushing touchdown
for the Falcons.
Jeremiah Anderson, also of
Hyannis and on the Falcons,
turned in two receptions for
13 yards and touchdowns,
bringing the final game tally to
Falcons 22 and Steelers 8.
This Sunday the Redskins
face the Bears at 9 a.m., the
Patriots take on the Steelers
at 10:30 a.m. and the Cowboys
battle the Falcons at noon.
The Cape Cod Flag Football League is
comprised of six teams of men 18 and

FANCY FOOTWORK - Jess Kaye refuses to be
de- "feet" -ed as she kicks the ball during the
BHS-Attleboro game on Tuesday.
TRIPLE DRIBBLING - Jaimee Fligg (9), Ali
Welly (6), and Christina Tyndallwork the ball
for Barnstable during a home game against
Attleboro on Tuesday.
Don
't be fooled by the scoreboards
from recent Barnstable girls
varsity soccer matches. Numbers
don't tell the whole story.
In spite of losses of late to Taunton and
Attleboro , the BHS team has demon-
strated that they are a force to be reck-
oned with.
On the road last Thursday in Taunton
the Raiders turned in an impressive first
half, netting two goals against the Tigers
Christina TyndaU started the scoring
when she sent in a sweet shot to the top
right corner and over the head of the
Taunton goalie.
Teammate Ah MeUy foUowed with a suc-
cessful penalty kick just prior to the half.
Taunton claimed the second half, net-
ting three goals before the final whistle
to cap the game at 3-2.
On Tuesday the Raiders faced Attle-
boro on their home turf, where they once
again demonstrated their mettle even
with Attleboro squeaking past them with
a 2-1 victory.
From the start Barnstable played
strong, refusing to give way to the Bom-
bardiers. Dominating the first half, the
Raiders were quick to return the ball to
their half of the field with solid kicks and
tight dribbling.
Courtney Silk had the goal for
Barnstable when she scored on a cross
from Tyndall, sending the ball into the
net just past the half-hour mark.
Greatly assisting her team in holding
off Taunton was Jordanka MacNeeley
whose sliding kicks and quick maneuvers
helped keep Taunton at bay until the
second half.
Next up for the girls is a trip to Dart-
mouth on Thursday followed by a road
game at Nauset on Friday.

Coach Clarke knows
basketball inside and out

HEADMAN-KeithClarke, in his office atthe Barnstable
Horace Mann Charter School, is head coach of the Cape
Cod Frenzy, part of the American BasketballAssociation.
Theschool'sdirector of guidance andsportspsychologist
knows the game inside and out.
When
Keith Clarke was approached
about becoming coach of the Cape Cod
Frenzy, a new addition to the American
Basketball Association (ABA), he was a little
skeptical. "I didn't know anything about them,"
he said.
After taking in a game in Springfield and try-
outs in New Bedford , however, Clarke's doubts
vanished. "I decided I would throw my hat in
the ring," he said.
While the ABA may be new to Clarke, basket-
ball is not. He has such a long history with the
sport one might say it's in his blood. Indeed,
Clarke's resume is as varied as the game itself
and even includes a coaching stint at BHS.
"Back in the day," Clarke attended college
on a basketball scholarship before joining the
semi-pro Boston Bruins basketball team in the
1970s.
Not content with simply understanding how
the game was played, Clarke set out to truly get
inside it, learning the psychology involved. This
endeavor led to a career with the Golden State
Warriors and the NBA as a team psychologist.
"I helped them learn how to handle stress,"
said Clarke. "And showed them what to do
about it."
From there Clarke, who came to Cape Cod to
be with his wife, Kathleen, ventured into the
world of high school basketball, coaching the
girls at BHS for one season. "It was their only
undefeated season ever," he said.
Although he enjoyed coaching, Clarke's
greater desire was to be more involved with
students in the Barnstable district, as weU as
student athletes. Today Clarke can be found at
the Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School
in Marstons Mills, where he is the director of
guidance, and on his
Web site, sportsfromtheneckup.com.
"Sports from the Neck Up" was created to
help coHege students with the occasionally dif-
ficult transition from high school to coUege and
the demands and chaUenges of being a coUege
athlete. "These kids have aspirations to play
at another level," said Clarke. "I know what it
takes to get there. I can help them get to that
next level."
Clarke is looking forward not only to coach-
ing, but also supporting the players on the
Frenzy in their opening season. "We've got
some great prospects that if we're able to sign,
we'll be very competitive," he said.
While Cape residents seem to enjoy a mul-
titude of sports, Clarke feels that having their
own basketbaU team win be a real boost. "This
gives the Cape community a team they can aU
root for," he said. "It also aUows the youngsters
to see up close athletes that have tremendous
skills."
Clarke appreciates that the ABA team makes
it easier for folks to enjoy a good game as
matches will be held at local venues and are
affordable. "People tend to want to be a part
of something that's good," he said. "We hope to
have a team that people want to come and see
play."
