passion for their craft.
With that in mind, it made
sense to honor a man who touched
so many lives by reaching out to the
audience through a genre that does
the same.
Wednesdaynight,eightbandsmade
up of BHS students performed in a

and Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, a
conservationorganizationestablished
by Irwin in 2002.
BHSstudentsCatherineMcDonough
and Matt Day conceived theidea. Mc-
Donough, producing the show under
the tutelage of chorus director Sean
Landers,said,"Financiallythedepart-
mentisindebt becausewehavetopay
for our own buses and trips."
Withlastyear'sSchool'sOutconcert
fundraiser in mind, McDonough and
Day were attempting to put together
a similarevent when Irwin'sdeath hit
the newsstands. "Because the Croc
Hunter was on everybody's minds, I
thought, why not make it have a pur-
pose?'" she said.
To add to the experience, Mc-
Donough decided to include sales of
hip rubber wristbandsbearingIrwin's
famous exclamation, "Crikey!" on one
sideand"TheCrocodileHunter"onthe
other."Weneededsomethingelse,"said
McDonough. "Something extra."
While the main purpose of the
concertwastoraisemoney,Land-
ersnoted that it also served as
a means of promoting musical
talents that fall outside

1 "Weare trying to tap into
J a population that maybe
" does not include classi-
) ^ cal orjazz,"he said. "This
concert is serving a lot of good
purposes."
Indeed, all eight groups wowed
the diverse audience. Musical styles
included rock, alternative, ska, jazz
and metal. "We chose the best of the
best,"said Day.
Backstage before the show the air
crackled with excitement as band
members warmed up. "We don't get
many performance opportunities for
rock," said Mike Harmon, leader of
Mike Harmon and Friends. "This is a
chance to share some original songs
no one's ever heard before."
Barnstable sophomore Luke Fater,
drummer for Rte. 149,was eagerly an-
ticipatinghisband'sinauguralperfor-
mance."It'sthebest feelingI've hadin
my life,"he said with a cheeky grin.
"It'salove of music,"said Day,who
also felt that honoring Irwin would
draw a the crowd.
"Nowhere else was doing anything
like this," said McDonough. "Alot of
people are talking about it. We hope
it willsell out."
It was a good thing McDonough
and Day aimed high. At the end of
the evening, the standing-room-only
show and bracelet sales had gener-
ated $2,200. "And we're still selling
bracelets,"said McDonough happily.
"So that number will get higher!"
"Weneedtothank Steve Irwin,"said
Harmonwhileonstage."Ifithadn'tbeen
for everything he's done, we wouldn't
be here doing what we're doing."
