As the parties et the Cap tain made two passes at Johnson ; the Trst ' cut his arm above the wrist , the second cutting his arm further up and also wounding him in the ;Jo. Johnson then retreated sli ghtl y and stood ith his ri«ht arm raised with a knife in his hand. W | h1 his left arm close to his side with a knife also in Captain Vent advanced on Johnson and made ,third pass at him , (he blade entering his left breast ,nd inflict ing a fatal wound. He immediatel y fell n to his knees and then over on his side and in a very short time died. On the arrival of the vessel t Rio the affair was brought before the U. S. Con- sul who, after examining intcfit , sent Captain Vent home for trial. The trial is not yet finished. Maine. Fishermen. Bridge Builders Please Notice. PROPOSALS will be received by either of the sub- scrib ers. Selectmen of the towns of Chatham and Harwich , until Monday, the seventh day of October next, for furnishing the materials and building a Brid ge over the Mudd y Cove River, at the wading place , so called , on the line of the said towns of Chatham and H ar wich , of the following dimensions and descri ption viz : The Brid ge to be two hundred feet in length , and to finish not less than eightee n feet wide within the rail- in g; to be fifteen feet hi gh above hi gh water mark at the hi ghest part ; about six feet hi gh on the Harwich shore, and level with the bank on the Chatham shore : to be built on piles of not less than seven inches in di- ameter at the small end , substant iall y placed in the earth , and the outside pil es t#be slanted inward , in a bracing manner , one foot to/every five feet in length ; to have five piles under eaclf cap,' which caps to be of six by ten inch pine timber. fand not more than twenty feet apart, with five stringejp of six by twelve inch pine timber , with one pile /tenoned and well secured in each stringer at the abiftments. The bridge to be planked with three inch pliuk, to be railed three and one half feet hi gh , with tllree by four pine joist , the posts of which to be not nftre than ten feet apart , and well secured to the stringers and caps, with two six inch stri ps of inch board below the rail, the lower stri p to bo placed upon the pla n k , and well secured to the posts , so as to confine the planks in place. All the ma- terials to be sound and merchant able , and all except the piles to be free from sap ; to be finished in a work- manlike manner , to the acceptance of the County Com- missioners , on or before the twenty-fift h day of Decem- ber next. The subscribers will meet at the store of Benjamin F. Eldrcd ge, at East Harwich , on the said seventh day of October next , at. 2 o'clock in the afternoon , for the purpose of opening the proposals received , and making a contract.
