plantings. "They get to be good-sized and are relatively
fast-growing. People get them to block out the neigh-
bor they don't want to see next door," Kossack said
with a chuckle.
White pine does well with fall planting. "We tell people
there are three seasons for planting here, spring, sum-
mer and fall. If you can dig the ground, most of these
shrubs will do well," said Kossack.
Consider your current conditions
Soil amendments for the proper pH and fertilizing
instructions vary from plant to plant. It is best to inquire
about the nutritional and site needs of a given plant
when browsing
at the nursery or
tree farm.
After picking
out some new
additions to the
landscape, at-
tention should
be given to pre-
existing flora.
Much-loved
trees and plants
on the property
will benefit from
a little extra
care. "Certain
plants may be
susceptible to
wind burn," Kos-
sack said. "Es-
pecially if you
live on the wa-
ter, you should be looking at wrapping them. We usu-
ally use burlap wrap or wilt-proof spray. The spray acts
as an anti-desiccant and prevents plants from dehydrat-
ing. You can also put up wind shields to protect plants
and trees."
Kossack said that it is not really necessary to mulch
trees. "That's more of an aesthetic thing, for decorative
purpose," he said. "Perennial gardens and shrubs can
be mulched now, using salt marsh hay or packaged
mulches. It protects the plants' root systems from the
damage that can occur when the ground freezes and
thaws repeatedly over the winter. The mulch keeps the
ground at a more even temperature. "
A visit to the local nursery should inspire a new crop
of gardening ideas. While the gnats are dying off and
the mid-day heat has abated for another fall, this is a
great time to get back in the dungarees and gitf
