AUBUCHON
also referred to as tankless, are an-
other excellent alternative , although
about a third more expensive and
have a flow limit of five gallons per
minute, which may not work in very
large homes with numerous systems
making demands on the water heat-
er.
Assess your situation
Most companies, including Rie-
dell, offer free energy audits where
a representative will go through your
home, and take a comprehensive
look at your water, heating and cool-
ing systems and offer an overall plan
to increase the energy efficiency of
your home.
There are some other changes that
a homeowner can make on their
own that will make a difference im-
mediately. If it is economically fea-
sible, or you are in need of a new
appliance, take the opportunity to
purchase one with an Energy Star
rating. On average, major appli-
ances consume about 16 percent of
a household' s energy consumption;
Energy Star models reduce this by
about 3.4 percent. Lighting, which
consumes 12 percent of the aver-
age household's total energy use, is
another energy drain that homeown-
er's can address. Exchange incan-
descent bulbs for compact fluores-
cent bulbs , which screw right into
the incandescent socket. Though
more expensive, Energy Star CFLs
last up to 10 times longer than stan-
dard bulbs.
Make minor repairs
To reduce the costs associated
with heat loss in your home, repair
cracks in walls, windows and doors
that let cold air in or heat escape,
and replace cracked caulking or
missing weather stripping as these
energy suckers allow up to 10 per-
cent of a home's heat to escape.
Install plastic interior storm windows
and keep the windows clean so that
the sun can help heat your home.
Close the blinds and draperies at
night to keep drafts out but open
them on hot, sunny days. Turn your
thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees
for eight hours a day. By installing a
programmable thermostat you can
do this automatically without sacri-
ficing comfort .
Insulate your attic or roof space.
Doing so can cut heating costs by
up to 30 per-
cent and it
will keep your
home warmer
in the winter.
Wrap your hot
water heater
with an insulat-
ing blanket and
wrap insulation
around pipes
in the base-
ment and crawl
space to avoid
heat loss. Turn
your ceiling
fan on to force
warm air down
so you can
set your ther-
mostat at a lower temperature , and
when you are not using the fire-
place be sure to keep the damper
closed so hot air doesn't escape. A
wood-burning stove is also a viable
solution.
