the TV is over 50 inches, the price rises to $3000 and above. Not included in the price of the TV, however, is its installation. At Nan- tucket Sound, said Shelgren, instal- lation price is based on the number of hours and the types of materials used. "It depends on how fancy," he said. To mount or not? Installing a tabletop TV costs around $60, while a wall mounted TV can cost anywhere from $300 to $800. The average installation costs around $600. Some stores, he said, will charge a flat rate. However, to save the most money, choose a store that charges by the hour, be- cause most jobs do not take as long as the fixed-rate price would equal. Available in more and more of both styles of TV is HD, or high defini- tion, cable. Through Comcast or other providers , homeowners can subscribe to certain HD channels to view clearer, more precise TV. It is available on an increasing number of channels. For most people , HD is a worth- while investment. Shelgren and Luchini predicted that within a few years, all channels will be HD. "HD is like going to the gas pumps and instead of buying regular, you're getting hi-test," said Shelgren. "It would be sinful not to get HD" on one of the newer models of flat screen TV. Preserving your investment After choosing, buying, and install- ing a new LCD or plasma TV, the most crucial part of making it a part of your home's charm is keeping it in good condition. If taken care of , a new TV will last an average of 60,000 hours , equal to about six hours of TV each day for 27 years , said Shelgren. To ex- tend a TV's life, "surge protect ," said Luchini. "The biggest problem with electronics is when they see different currents. " In addition, dusting the TV frequent- ly can keep the buttons like new, and the screen looking clear. Video games and DVD menus should not be left on the TV for long periods of time , because some TVs will retain the memory of what was on them. Homeowners need to be, "aware of what kind of program they leave on the TV," said Shelgren. To keep the quality of the TV good through the years , the contrast and brightness of the screen can be turned down. With careful choice and proper care , a TV can be part of a home for years to come. And , with the current buyer 's market , now is a great time to make a new TV a part of your home 's fall wardrobe. "It's a good time for the person ^— who wants to buy, " mwF said Shelgren. * M* Plasmas are made o f cells whose structures house gas in order to create a clearer p icture.
