TV shopp ing without the static

T^ifty years ago, a home
with a television was
the star of the neighbor-
hood. Today the tables
have turned and almost all
homes have televisions, if
not, they seem incomp lete.
With recent trends many hom-
eowners have felt their nests should
be feathered a little more brightly
with a newer, more advanced model
Due to continual price drops, the
past few years have been a great
time to buy one of the new styles of
TV for the home.
However, in the past it was pretty
simple to choose a television , the
choices were slim , but today it can
now be more difficult to choose
between LCD, DLR A/V, or plasma.
And one must also understand that
with the new models there may also
be some hidden costs that go along
with the purchase.
"This industry...is downwardly
fluid...that' s good for the consumer,"
said Ralph Shelgren, manager of
Nantucket Sound in Hyannis, a TV,
audio, and electronics store. Be-
cause many popular manufacturers
of TVs-like Sony, Samsung, Toshiba,
Panasonic, and Pioneer-compete
for business , they also lower their
prices at similar times.
For example , in 2004, said Jeff
Luchini,
also of

a 32
inch
Pana-
sonic plasma screen TV sold for
$4500. Now, it would sell for around
$1300. "It's a great time to buy a flat
screen ," he said.

Unlike older models , both LCD
(Liquid Crystal Display) and plasma
screen TVS are about four inches in
depth, and able to be wall mounted ,
explained Luchini.
According to Luchini, LCD TVs are
fixed panel displays and are avail-
able in a wider variety of sizes than
plasmas. Plasmas are made of cells
whose structures house gas in order
to create a clearer picture. However,
plasma TVs are only available 42
inches or larger.
Though both styles of TV are in-
creasingly popular, Nantucket Sound
sells more LCD flat screens than
plasmas.
"LCD is more popular because the
size is more flexible...! think that is a
big factor," said Luchini.
Prices range widely for the two
most popular styles of TV. For TVs
under 26 inches, the price is $1000
and under. For televisions under 42
inches the price is under $2000. If
