With a little elbowgrease, f urniture restoration can be easy and affo rdable i By Britt Beedenbender news@barnstablepatriot.com It 's fairly obvious when a favorite piece of wood furniture needs attention. Food stains and watermarks blemish a handsome table; after years of faithful applica- tions, spray-on polishes leave a dark, sticky film on sideboards and chairs. Stripping and refinishing a piece of furniture , particularly if it is an antique, can detract from its value. There are simple steps that you can take, however, to improve the ap- pearance of a well-worm piece. A thorough cleaning and subsequent polishing can transform the appear- ance of a piece of furniture while keeping the original finish intact. Thomas Buto of East Dennis An- tiques said that the key is to "start with a gentle cleanser, working up to stronger solutions as necessary. " He suggested that you go over the piece with a sponge that has been mildly dampened with water and Murphy's Oil Soap to loosen surface dirt and grime. You should not allow the wood to become saturated, and you should wipe the surface clean immediately after with a cotton cloth. This gentle approach will clean the piece with- out stripping it of its finish. Buff it up In order to impart a uniform luster to the surface once the piece has been cleaned; Buto suggested us- ing a clean cotton cloth to apply a beeswax product such as Butcher 's Wax or Minwax. "You should apply the wax lightly, like wax to a car. If there is too much build-up it will be difficult to buff out."
