Sept. 23 hazardous product
collection for Barnstable
and Yarmouthresidents
The Barnstable Hazardous
Products Collection Center
will be open on Saturday,
Sept. 23 from 9 am to noon
for residents of Barnstable
and Yarmouth to partici-
pate in a free household
hazardous products (HHP)
collection at the Barnstable
Transfer Station, 45 Flint
Street,Marstons Mills. Small
businesses may participate
at cost. Take advantage of
this opportunity to dispose
of hazardous and toxic ma-
terials that can harm fam-
ily members and pets, and
contaminate groundwater,
lakes, ponds and soil in the
event of a hurricane or other
emergency.
Materials that will be ac-
cepted at town HHP Collec-
tions are:
• Pesticides, Herbicides ,
Fungicides, Outdated Pesti-
cides-DDT, Chlordane, Sil-
vex, Pentawood Preserva-
tives, Rodent Poisons, "No
Pest" Strips, Flea Collars
• Gasoline,Brake and Pow-
er Steering Fluids, Radiator
Flush, White Wall Cleaner,
Bug and Tar Remover
• Furniture Polish, Metal
Polish, Moth Balls, Drain
Cleaners, Spot Removers ,
Solvents, Cesspool Clean-
ers
• Oil and Alkyd Paints and
Stains, Marine Paints, Auto
Paints, other Solvent-based
Paints, Solvent-based Paint
Thinners and Strippers,Tur-
pentine, Mineral Spirits, Ac-
etone, Solvent-based Wood
Finishes, Varnish, Shellac,
Wood Preservatives
• Photo and Pool Chemi-
cals, Chemistry Sets, Acids
• Participants who bring
mercury-containing ther-
mometers , thermostats ,
switches , blood pressure
gauges and jars of mercury
to the collection willreceive a
digitalthermometer or abev-
erage coupon in exchange.
Mercury is always silver, so
keep your thermometers
that have red, green or blue
liquid!
Materials that will not be
accepted at town HHP Col-
lections are:
• Latex and Acrylic Paints,
Water-based Stains and Wa-
ter-based Wood Finishes-Re-
cycle or open the cans and
pour paint into a container
of cat litter to absorb the
liquid. Dispose of the cat lit-
ter in your household trash.
Recycle empty,drypaint cans
at town recycling centers.
Barnstable residents may
also recycle usable latex ,
acrylic, oil and alkyd paints
at the Barnstable paint re-
cycling sheds located at the
transfer station.
• Alkaline Batteries-throw
in household trash; they no
longer contain toxic ingre-
dients.
• Explosives, Ammunition,
Fireworks or Flares-check
with Police or Fire Depart-
ment for disposal
• Syringes , Needles ,
Sharps-check with the Fire
Department or Transfer Sta-
tion disposal
• Smoke Detectors-place
in cardboard box.'tape shut,
dispose of in trash
• Loose Asbestos-check
with a licensed contractor
for removal
Residents will need a cur-
rent beach or dump sticker,
a driver 's license, vehicle
registration or property tax
bill with a local address.
Small Businesses may par-
ticipate in any Household
Hazardous Waste Collections
at cost. Businesses must
make arrangements to par-
ticipate. Call the Barnstable

information.
