TheBarnstableHighSchoolgirlsvolleyballteam
is off and runningonce again. In recent days they
havedefeated Bridgewater-Raynham,NorthQuincy
andTaunton. The winthat everyoneisstilltalking
about, however, is that against Beverly Hills High
School.Yes, as in California.
The Raiders' season kicked off last Wednesday
witha3-0winover Bridgewater-Raynham,their75th
straightwin.Several days later, the team traveled
to Marshfleld to battle the girls of Beverly Hills.
Giventhat Californiaispractically the volleyball
capital of the U.S.,folks were expecting atalented
team and an excitingmatch. That is exactly what
they got.
TheRaiders dominatedthe courtfrom beginning
to end, leaving no doubt in the 90210 set that vol-
leyball in the east can more than stand up against
volleyball from the west.
TheBHSgirlsled4-3intheopeninground,finish-
ing at 11-3in the set. They capped their win with
25-9 second set and a final set of 25-12.
With players like Stephanie Bristol,Kara Cullen
andNatalie Cohen at the net,it wasnot surprising
that Head Coach TomTurco wasn't nervousabout
the game. "First you have to play better than your
opponent and Ifelt we did that,"he said."The girls
were excited to play a team from California. They
wanted to send a message that there was pretty
good volleyball on the east coast."
Consider that message sent.
Followingthe Beverly Hillsmatch,the girlstook
on North Quincy on Monday, coming away with
another win, Turco's career 400th
.
Barnstable sailed through the match, netting
25-11, 25-16 and 25-14 against one of their more
formidable opponents. Bristol had 10 kills for
Barnstable, while Cullen added nine and Cohen
snagged seven.
On Wednesday the team traveled to Taunton,
taking them 3-0, another straight-set victory for
the Raiders as they came away with 25-6, 25-11,
and 25-15. Cullen turned in nine kills and setter
Erin Johnson had 23 assists in the win.
The team travelsto South YarmouthonMonday
to play the D-YDolphins at 5 p.m.

house with a 6-0 victory.
BATTLE FOR THE BALL - Mel Black (#18) and Erika Hansen battle with
Durfee players for control of the ball during Tuesday's home game.
It'
s all in the flick of the
stick. That should be
the motto of the BHS
girls varsity field hockey team
as they continue to show
strength and determination.
After tying Nauset in a
physical and challenging road
match on Monday, the team
trounced Durfee at home at
Kaitlin M. Silk Field 6-0 Tues-
day.
In the Nauset game the
Raiders took the lead when
Lynn Donoghue scored on a
rebound , sending it neatly into
the goal. The game was tied
when Nauset's Ashley Hansen
scored on a penalty stroke.
On a beautiful Tuesday af-
ternoon, the girls faced Durfee
in a spirited and successful
game. Lynn Donoghue and
Casey Ostrander were stellar
scorers, with two each in the
first half.
Ostrander had two points
in a row in the opening half,
the second on an assist from
Courtney King, while Dono-
ghue sent her second in with
just 11 seconds on the clock
before the break.
Barnstable 's offense was
formidable , overpowering
Durfee at every turn. Erika
Hansen was continually at
the ready, preventing Durfee
from making much forward
progress , while Kristen Logan
also turned in a strong perfor-
mance.
In the second half, Logan
knocked in a neat goal off of a
corner by Jessi Strock. King
also scored in the second half
on an assist from Lizzy Seid-
man, bringing the score to 6-0.
In the goal for BHS Danielle
Cotellessa was on the mark,
garnering her third shutout
for the season. BHS stands at
3-0-1 overall.
The team travels to D-Y
on Monday and Attleboro on
Tuesday, with their next home
match on Oct. 5 against Dart-
mouth.

Many folks have a lucky number. Perhaps it's
a birthday, an anniversary, or just a number they
like. For BHS VolleyballHead Coach Tom Turco,
that number would have to be 400.
When the varsity girls volleyball team defeated
North Quincy on Monday,Turco came away with
more than a simple victory. The win marked his
400th career winin a 19-year history as coach.
Turco was aware of the statistic as the State
VolleyballCoachesAssociationkeepscareful track
of wins and losses. "We have to let [them] know
what our win/loss record is after each year," said
Turco.
Nonetheless, the milestone inspired a moment
ofreflection inthe devoted coach."Itwaslike,'I've
been doing this for a long time,'" he said. "Actu-
ally, there was more of a sense of appreciation for
the hard-working,dedicated and focused athletes
and coaching staff that I have been involved with
over the years."
For Turco, coaching volleyball is a reward in
itself. "Volleyball is the ultimate team sport," he
said. "You can have the best spikers in the world
but ifthere'sapoor set or apoor passprior to that,
thingsbreak down.Everybodyrelieson each other
to makeit work.Theworkethicandattitude ofthe
BHS players is avery motivating thing for me."
Turco, who credits former BHS baseballcoach
Dean Boger and former BHS hockey coach Peter
Melcheone for positively influencing him at the
start of his career, says that the team itself is the
best aspect of the sport. "They are truly amazing
year after year. They have the courage to set their
teams' goals very high," he said. "And they are
willingto sacrifice and put in the long hours and
hard work necessary to achieve them."
On the bus ride back to Barnstable, the girls
presented Turco with a card commemorating
the win. Prior to last night's home game against
Falmouth,Turcowasgiven aceremonialvolleyball
byBHSAthleticDirector SteveFrancisinaspecial
presentation. "It wasawonderfulgesture and very
much appreciated,"Turco said of the accolades.
With that, it was back to coaching the team
toward their next victory.

THROWING DOWN THE GAUNTLET - Facing off for the first time since 1997,the D-Y Dolphins and the
BHS Raiders prepare to play on the gridiron at Barnstable High School. The Dolphins ended a 31-year
losing streak when they toppled BHS 19-7.
TEAM SUPPORT - The Barnstable High School cheerleaders execute some impressive moves during
Friday night's game against the D-Y Dolphins. Inspite of the Raiders ' loss to D-Y the squad maintained
their enthusiasm and spirit. <

In spite of their loss, the Raiders never gave up,
continuing the challenge until the final whistle.
It began with a bang and ended with a
whimper, at least on the Barnstable side
of the field. In green and white territory,
however, there was much celebration as
the D-Y Dolphins beat the BHS Raiders
19-7 in a grand gridiron match for the first
time since 1975.
Thirty-one years has obviously made quite
a difference in the D-Yfootball program. As
they managed to dominate the field, the
Dolphins demonstrated skill and smarts
against the Raiders that allowed them to
put an end to a decades-old losing streak.
