Friend or Relative - is an
industry term. One of the
major reasons people travel
is to visit friends and rela-
tives."
Northcross said travelers
are increasingly looking for
their "tribe" of friends. The
motto of the moment is,
"I'm just trying it through
the day, and hang with my
friends."
Has the Cape become a
"post-resort" community?
"We are more and more of
a retirement destination,"
Northcross said, "but we
still get between four and
five million visitors a year to
the Cape and Islands. There
are a lot of places on earth
that call themselves tourist
destination that don't get
that kind of visitorship. If
the tourists all went away
tomorrow, we would feel it
dramatically. What my mem-
bers are feeling is a shift
and change, a consumer
change."
Asked whether under-
used hotel rooms may help
meet the Cape's housing
gap, Northcross said there
is "some discussion about
that. It may be an affordable
work force gain, but we may
have some loss" by not col-
lecting room taxes.
The Cape chamber looks
at all industries on the Cape,
not just tourism. Northcross
said Cape Cod Healthcare
CEO Steve Abbott has told
her that hospital statistics
show an increased seasonal-
ity of use as the institutions
try to maintain year-round
services.
"Our solution at the mo-
ment ," Northcross said,
"is to get some good third-
party research on what
the trends are." Part of the
effort will look at whether
what the Cape has to offer is
what upcoming generations
want as part of a vacation
experience.
Is the Cape priced right?
"Depends on who you
ask," said Northcross.
"That's the good question
we're posing to our consul-
tants. In some cases, we're
priced extremely reasonably.
There 's a wide range. We
think the perception is that
it's expensive,"
The hope is to have the
consultant's report rolled
out by January so members
can adjust their market
plans accordingly.
"We're not going out of
business," Northcross said
with a smile. "We are feeling
the shifting sands beneath
our feet."
Tradition and Change
"We did identify hospital-
ity and tourism as a tradi-
tional economic cluster on
the Cape and one that we
ought to continue to sup-
port ," said Kathy Schatz-
berg, co-chair of the Cape
and Islands Regional Com-
petitiveness Council . "We
considered it the bread and
butter. I still think it domi-
nates the Cape economi-
cally. I think visitors gener-
ate more of the money that
flows through our economy
than almost anything else
happening down here."
When it comes to tourists
versus second-home owners
and other gradations of com-
mitment to the Cape, Schatz-
berg said, "Bill's point really
is that, in many ways, it's the
same thing. These people
will go for massage and salon
services just as visitors will
go. They'll go to galleries and
spend money in gift shops
and eat in restaurants just
like more short-term visi-
tors."
When the council started
talking about job training
for the hospitality industry,
said Schatzberg, Ranch
Kimball, the state 's director
of economic development ,
"instantly made the con-
nection. It's the same kind
of thing as training people
who work in restaurants
and hotels. Those same
people with the same kind
of training are who we need
in retirement communities,
nursing homes, at reception
desks, doing facility man-
agement , preparing food.
Schatzberg, who is
president of Cape Cod Com-
munity College , said the
Zammer Institute on her
campus makes it a point to
present the whole range of
hospitality occupations to
students. Naming one of the
Cape 's retirement communi-
ties, she said, "They might
not get hired by a hotel ,
but they might get hired by
Heatherwood. "
