so closely, you may have
wondered why we called

The 'old wreck' has a name
Old photo calls
Centerville
wreck 'Vera'
By David Still II

VERA - This photo of a large husk of a ship beached at Centerville
provides another clue to the name and origins of the "old wreck." The
handwrittennotation"Ship'Vera'"offersapossiblenamefor thevessel.
Toward the left end of the ship are people, providing a scale to the
overall size, estimated by the Patriots
be in the range of 270 feet.
Toanyone else, the picture
wouldn't have been much to
look at, but to Debby McLis-
ter it was a revelation.
Whileworkingthroughbox-
es of photographs and other
materials in her aunt's attic
she came across a photo of
a beached ship well into the
distance,but with acouple of
key notations. Hand-written
on the black page contain-
ing the photo was "Wreck on
CentervilleBeach" and "Ship
'Vera.'"
McLister isthe daughter of
Centerville native Laurence
Bearse,whoplayed onthe old
wreck as a child and helped
identify the then-unknown
timbers found last year as a
ship, not wharfremains.
Bearse and McLister
dropped by the Patriot of-
ficethis week with the photo
album.
The photograph and other
information has been shared
with Vic Mastone, director
and chief archaeologist for
the state's Board of Under-
water Archaeological Re-
sources, who'sbeen involved
in researching the wreck
since it was discovered last
December.
The wooden remains were
removed to the town transfer
station earlier this year.
Mastone said the file on
the wreck hasn't been closed
and the photo and name will
providesomenew avenuesfor
investigation.
The photographalsoshows
people near one end of the
ship, providing a sense of
scale. As suggested by the
sheer size of the timbers and
other pieces unearthed last
year,it'sbig.Ourrough analy-
sis of the figure and the ship
makes her to be somewhere
in the vicinity of 270 feet.
A search of the on-line
shipping records available
through Mystic Seaport
showed a number of Veras
listed in American shipping
records, including a Norwe-
gian vessel of 265 feet and
1155 tons. The dimensions
were promising, but on-line
records showthisto be aniron
steamer,whichiscertainlynot
thiswooden vessel.
Mastone planned to share
the new information with his
colleagues to see what more
can be found.
The form of things to come at CCH
Hospital entrance art
designed by Osterville
sculptor
By David Still II

DAVID STILL II PHOTO
INSPIRATION
EXPLANATION
- Osterville artist
David Lewis explains
the inspirationfor his
sculpture designed for
the main entrance at
Cape Cod Hospital in
Hyannis.
Osterville sculptor David Lewis is known
more for his human forms -Iyannough,James
"The Patriot" Otis,Mercy Otis Warren, Enoch
Cobb - but his planned sculpture for the
entrance of Cape Cod Hospital is decidedly
more abstract.
At a recent unveiling of the wax forms that
will become the stainless steel sculpture at
Lewis's home gallery, the artist said that it
felt good to get back to less literal interpre-
tations.
The piece commissioned by the Hyannis
hospital more than hints at the coasting
schooners that once plied the waters around
the Cape.The gentlycurved triangularpieces
are positioned as the sails of such a vessel
underway and filled with wind.
The waxforms willbe carefullyrecorded for
position and then disassembled to be sent to
the foundry. Thefinalpiece,the name ofwhich
is still being worked out, will be polished to
a matte finish.
Lewis'sconnection withCape Cod Hospital
dates to his birth, as does his connection to
the ocean.
