By Mary Richmond columnist@barnstablepatriot.com T hese days the sun rises a little later and sets a little earlier, stealing a little light each time it does so. Morn- ings are quiet now, except for the crows and gulls. Gone are the trills and whis- tles, chips and clangs of the early morning chorus that greeted us not so long ago. Birds are busy gathering now, having raised their young and left behind an- other season in the sun. Many are preparing to migrate and some already have. Shorebirds continue to move through our area, these last birds being this year's young heading down from northern breeding grounds. Miraculously they will travel with no maps or compass but what they carry in their own genes. Guided by wisdom as old and inexplicable as time itself, they will fly south to a place they have never been on a flyway gen- erations before them have used just as blindly and surely. Fields are full of the last of summer's flowers. Goldenrod blankets many areas with its cheery yellow and asters are beginning to raise their starry heads. A few last roses, chicory blooms and thistle remain but mostly it is a time of seeds. Queen Anne's Lace, that lovely bloom of the wild carrot that dotted our landscape not so long ago, is ^ still standing but fc^yn-x its blooms are now ^r^-\ dark baskets of seeds, ^ASj*~ cupped toward the sun • \ before being dispersed to find new homes. V f t~j ? Plants are amaz- ^wP1 ing examples of '^g W^ adaptation and ^/P their seeds are If spread in many TJ^ ways. Some, 7^§T like burrs, 3 don,t already \ ^° keep your cats indoors, this is t a good time to do -) so. Youngrabbits, • chipmunks, mice Q-. and voles are actually igjT their favored prey and must use all their powers of stealth and camouflage to evade becoming someone else's dinner. Young hawks are being heard and seen in many neigh- borhoods as they complain loudly about being on their own. A few young ospreys remain, though most of their parents have already begun a leisurely trip south. In the ponds the frogs are darkening once more, the better to blend with the mud and the darkening water. A few late water lilies scent the air as painted turtles pile one upon another to take afternoon sun on half-sub- merged logs. Marshes are full of herons.and egrets gathering and feedinjjjiihd it is not unusual these daysiYin.vML'i;j:wiiTggl THEBLACK DAHLIA(R) Digital- GRIDIRON GANG (PG-13) Digital - Fri.- Thu.
