Scanning the future
COMPASS CHAT-Filming
the next episode of the Senior
Center 's new Channel 18 show,
The Senior Compass, Elyse
DeGroot talks with visitors about
the new scan card and touch-
screen system.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE B:3
to-read computer touch-
screen. Visitors then choose
from a vast menu of activi-
ties on the screen including
the classes offered, lectures,
events, and even simple
socializing.
Irmgard Henderson of
Craigvillewas one of the first
to be presented with her new
scan card. Hesitant at first,
Henderson was delighted
when signing in took less
than a minute. "Oh, that's
wonderful!" she exclaimed.
Jackie Young of
Barnstable village was
equally enthused. "I love
it! It's easy," she said. "You
don't have to stand in line."
Because the system is
operated with a computer
program through MySenior-
Center.com, activities and
events can be updated regu-
larly, even daily or hourly.
What's more, messages can
be sent on an individual or
group basis. For example,
if someone leaves behind
an item after a class, a note
can be left on their account
reminding them to pick it
up. "Or if there is a big event
coming up, like the Silver
Plate," said Director of Se-
nior Services Elyse DeGroot ,
"We can put in a message
that goes to everyone."
To officially unveil the new
system and celebrate the
technology upgrade, visitors
were treated to a cookie and
cake soiree on Wednesday
following the center's noon
lunch.
DeGroot also recorded a
special episode of her new
Channel 18 television show,
The Senior Compass , during
the festivities. A major por-
tion of the coming episode
will be about the new scan
card system.
DeGroot noted that the
new system is not only
user-friendly but secure as
well. "Each person has their
own unique ID number," she
explained. "We're also taking
photos so that we can more
easily identify our regular
visitors."
The system is so advanced
that those traveling to Nan-
tucket will be able to visit
that senior center, as well as
others that offer the same
scan card system.
"The more you keep learn-
ing, the fresher your brain
stays," said DeGroot. "We
want to keep everyone fresh
and this willhelp. Plus, we
knew you guys would love it."

Visitation rights...
CONTINUED FROM PAGEB:3
have visitation rights, and
these rightsmay be pursued
onlyif the child'sparents are
divorcing, one or both par-
ents have died, or the child
is born out of wedlock.
In other words, in these
states the parents in in-
tact families have the final
word on whether or not
grandparents are allowed
to visit.
Recent case law has made
Massachusetts particularly
restrictive to grandparents
seeking visitation. In Mas-
sachusetts, the burden is
on the grandparent to show
more than that it would
just be in the child's "best
interests" that such visita-
tion take place, but that
the curtailment or denial
of grandparent visitation
would result in some de-
monstrable detriment or
harm to the social or psy-
chological well-being of
the child.
This being said, there are
no absolute and firm rules
for determiningwhen a court
will grant visitation; every
case is decided on its own
facts and merits. However,
grandparents can take steps
to improve their chances of
gaining visitation rights.
In deciding visitation cas-
es, courts always consider
the previous relationship
between the grandparents
and grandchild, and they
look favorably on evidence
of a consistent and caring
relationship. Forthisreason,
a grandparent should try to
build a meaningful relation-
ship with a child from the
outset.
If the child'sparent rejects
the grandparent's efforts to
visit,the grandparent should
keep a record of his or her
attempted contacts and
continue to make a reason-
able effort to preserve the
relationship with the grand-
child,such asby sendinggifts
and cards.
When it come time to meet
with an attorney, grandpar-
ents should have documen-
tary evidence and names of
witnesses to support their
claim that visitation is in
the best interest of the child
or that the denial of such
visitation would result in
some objective detriment to
the child.
Attorney Michael L. Lavender spe-
cializes in Elder Law and is in private
practice in Barnstable village.
Reps recommend

that enrollment will be open starting

around" coverage throught the state
program to supplement payments made
under the federal Medicare D pharmacy
program. To learn more, contact the
